We are committed to fostering excellence, innovation, belonging and community in all that we do.This department is a newly formed unit within the Vice-President Research & Innovation portfolio that manages two key areas: the review of all research at the institution that involves humans, and the new and growing area of Research Security. Most research that takes place at SFU touches on one or both areas. This position is fundamental in establishing the foundation for processes, procedures, education, and training relating to recent federal government regulations on safeguarding research. The position will work closely with departmental colleagues, as well as other core areas in Research Operations, as we development and implement initiatives to ensure research compliance obligations are met.About the RoleIn this key role you will plan, develop, implement, and evaluate strategies that foster positive engagement with the research community, and ensure oversight and governance obligations are understood and met. You will advise researchers and leadership on research security matters, as well as set objectives, communicate, share ideas, and foster relationships with professional groups and organizations. You will build strategic relationships with other universities, organizations, and government agencies to support the research community on all matters related to safeguarding research. In addition, you will provide advice and expertise on research privacy, and conflict of interest matters.The ideal candidate for this role has worked in a related area and developed legal and/or regulatory compliance skills (specifically in research). Given the range of interactions that goes with this role, you will need well-developed relationship building skills and you are a person that thrives in a complex multi-divisional work environment. You are a self-starter and keen to not only develop the operational aspects of this new area, but also enthusiastic about instilling a positive culture in this newly amalgamated team with the aim to focus on relationships, learning and education, as well as efficient, effective, pragmatic and innovative solutions to support each other, as well as the SFU research community.QualificationsBachelor’s degree in Law, Business, Commerce (or another related discipline) and a minimum of five years of experience in a regulatory compliance environment (preferably academic research or research administration) or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
