Main purpose of job:The British High Commission in Ottawa is looking for a creative and energetic individual to join our communications team. The successful candidate will play an important role in leading and delivering our digital communications activities across Canada, working closely with the High Commissioner and senior team. They will also work alongside colleagues across our North America network and in the UK to deliver broader communications objectives.
The Digital Media Officer will work with policy leads to explain and champion the UK government’s work in Canada through social media outreach and strategic communications campaigns. By leveraging the latest digital trends this person will ensure key messages stand out in a crowded online space and reach intended audiences. This position will also provide support on media and communications logistics for events and projects, including visits by UK ministers and senior officials, and provide leave cover for the Head of Communications when necessary.Roles and responsibilities:
- Produce engaging and informative content for the British High Commission’s digital channels, including graphics, video, photos and copy for X, Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn
- Lead the British High Commission’s strategic digital communications plans in Canada, including by developing and executing digital campaigns
- Work closely with policy leads at the High Commission and communications staff in London to promote UK priorities
- Track social media metrics to produce regular analytics reports and create data-driven content strategies
- Ensure the Canada pages on GOV.UK are updated regularly
- When necessary, reply to press and public enquiries in a timely and professional manner
- Lead regular training workshops for British High Commission staff on social media and digital communications
- Ensure regular monitoring of social media channels
Essential qualifications, skills and experienceEssential on arrival:
- At least two years of experience working in communications, marketing, media or related fields
- University degree in communications, marketing, journalism or comparable experience
- Strong English language writing proficiency, with excellent editing and proofreading skills
- Considerable experience managing social media channels, including conceptualizing social media strategies, developing content calendars, drafting copy for posts, creating visual assets, executing campaigns and communicating with online audiences
- A strong sense of creativity coupled with an understanding of the latest digital trends
- Strong event photography, video production and editing skills
- An interest in international relations
- Flexibility to work occasional evening and weekend events
Candidates must have the legal status to live and work in Canada.Language requirements:Language: EnglishLevel of language required: English, and French (spoken and written) would be considered a strong asset.Desirable qualifications, skills and experienceDesirable:
- Experience using Adobe Photo Shop and Adobe Premiere Pro
- Experience using various content creation, scheduling and monitoring software (e.g. Canva, Hootesuite, Meltwater)
- Experience with audio production and software
- Experience advising senior government officials
- Experience working with traditional news media
- Experience using website content management systems
- Strong oral and written skills in French

Working hours per week 37.5Applicant is expected to appear in person for approximately 60% of week but working from home is permitted and encouraged when realistic to do so.
