Position Title: Part-Time Professor, Exploring Extended Reality (XR)
Status: Part-Time Professor Contract (1-6 hours/week)
Program/Department: Media and Communication Studies, University of Guelph-Humber
Campus/Location: The University of Guelph-Humber (207 Humber College Blvd, Toronto) is located within the traditional and treaty lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit.
Salary: Academic start salaries are determined by qualifications and years of related experience.About the Part-Time Professor Role:
The University of Guelph-Humber invites talented, committed individuals interested in teaching on a part-time basis to take the first step in joining our dynamic faculty team for the Winter 2025 semester. We are accepting applications for part-time Professor in the Media and Communication Studies program.The incumbent will be responsible for teaching a course called MDST*3360 – New Worlds: Exploring XR. Candidates will be responsible for creating an effective adult learning environment, facilitating learning and classroom (both on campus and online) interaction, assessing student progress and providing student feedback.Course Description for MDST*3360 – New Worlds: Exploring XR:As an introduction to the concepts, tools and storytelling potential of Extended Reality (XR), this course allows students to experience and experiment with immersive technologies such as Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR) and Mixed Reality (MR). In addition to gaining a theoretical understanding of the impactful tools offered by XR, students will explore its diverse applications including in immersive journalism, documentary film and video and marketing. Students will learn XR production and storytelling techniques that they will apply to the creation of their own XR media.QualificationsWhat you bring to the role:
Education
The successful candidate will hold at least a Bachelor’s degree (Master’s is preferred) in Media Production, or closely related to, in Media Production, Film Studies, Communications, or a closely related field.Experience and Skills
The successful candidate will have at least 5 years’ experience as a media production professional with hands-on experience in video production and editing, and immersive storytelling principles including spatial audio and 360 video. Prior teaching at the post-secondary level is an asset.In addition, the success candidate will posses the following required technical skills:

  • Knowledgeable and up to date with trends and developments in XR technology (VR/AR/MR), and their applications in various fields
  • Proficient in the operation of 360 cameras (GoPro Max, Insta360 Pro 2)
  • Ability to translate traditional film or media production concepts to the VR/AR environment
  • Demonstrated proficiency with 360 VR video production and post-production workflows using Adobe Premiere Pro for editing and MistikaVR for stitching.Knowledge of XR hardware and software, and troubleshooting skills
  • 360 ambisonics sound capture (Zoom H3VR) and editing/mixing (Adobe Premiere Pro, Blue Ripple 03A)
  • Video codecs and encoding
