Your Opportunity:An exciting opportunity exists to develop as a Health Care Aide (HCA) and work to your full scope of practice within a collaborative team at the Peter Lougheed Centre (PLC). There are Four of these positions to be filled for this opportunity Unit 54 General Medicine is a temporary 30 bed inpatient medical unit sharing space with surgery. These temporary surge beds are intended to help support increased patient demand at PLC. You will be responsible for caring for medical inpatients (usually under the care of a Hospitalist) and providing excellent patient and family centered care supporting the acute needs of our patients. As a HCA on Unit 54 General Medicine, you will collaborate with the multi-disciplinary team consisting of Nurses, Physicians, Allied Health professionals and support workers; fostering a unit culture that values and respects individual team members and their expertise. As the successful candidate you will demonstrate strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively maintain collaborative working relationships with members of the multidisciplinary team; decision making, problem solving, and critical thinking skills using sound clinical reasoning; patient advocacy and patient education skills; time management and prioritization skills; conflict resolution skills and promotion of a positive teamwork environment while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS. In the event that no Regular Employee from this workplace expresses their interest by the deadline, the vacancy shall be filled under the provisions of the collective agreement.Description:As a Health Care Aide (HCA), you will work as a collaborative member of the multi-disciplinary team providing personal assistance including supporting activities of daily living and support services to patients (clients, residents) who require short-term assistance or ongoing support, in accordance with the patient care plan and facility policies and procedures. In this position you will work closely with patients, families, and caregivers spanning the continuum of care in home, community or health care facilities assisting nurses with the provision of routine care to meet patients’ hygiene, nutrition, mobility, recreation and safety needs, assisting with organized activities or programs and observing and reporting on a patient’s mood, health, and wellbeing. Working under a regulated health professional you will be assisting in the maintenance of a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors, and maintaining effective communication with patients and health professionals.

Required Qualifications:Completion of Health Care Aide Certificate within 18 months of hire and active directory status on the Alberta Health Care Aide Directory. Must provide a confirmation letter as proof of enrolment from the Directory at https://www.albertahcadirectory.com/health-care-aides/confirmation/. Nursing students currently enrolled in an approved Alberta nursing program who have successfully completed a minimum of 100 hours of practicum; and are either in their 1st year of practical nursing program; or 2nd year of baccalaureate nursing or psychiatric nursing program will be considered. Must attest to this compliance and provide proof of qualification. Additional Required Qualifications:Recent experience in the Calgary Zone, regularly working on an acute care medicine/surgical inpatient unit within the last year. Registration in the Alberta HCA Directory. Current Basic Cardiac Life Support – Health Care Provider (BLS-HCP) and It’s Your Move certification. Experience in Connect Care for adult acute care patients. Central Venous Access Device (CVAD) certification. N95 Fit Tested. Completion of Required Organizational Learning (ROLs – formerly Annual Compulsory Education). Demonstrated ability to work at full scope of practice, including long periods of standing/walking, bending/twisting and pushing/pulling/heavy lifting (up to 50 pounds). Strong communication skills essential. Demonstrated ability to work productively and positively with a large multi-disciplinary team. Preferred Qualifications:3 years of experience on an adult acute/inpatient medicine unit in the last 5 years. Non-Violent Crisis Intervention or See The Person trained.
