Tenure Track Position in Social Work (Scholarship and Practice with Trans/Two Spirit* and/or Older Adult Populations/Communities)
FCS, Social Work
Posted: December 17, 2024
Deadline to Apply: Friday, January 31, 2025

*Scholarship and practice with 2SLGBTQI+ welcome. Priority given to trans/Two Spirit focus.

Located in downtown Toronto, the largest and most culturally diverse city in Canada and on the territory of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee and the Wendat Peoples, the School of Social Work in the Faculty of Community Services (FCS) at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) invites applications for a tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, commencing July 1, 2025, subject to final budgetary approval.

The School of Social Work acknowledges the contributions, lived experiences and remarkable resilience of Asian, Indigenous and Black-identified peoples who continue to seek liberation within the colonial project of Canada. We strive to be a leader in critical social work education, research, and practice that works against anti-Black racism and anti-Indigenous racism and advances anti-oppression, anti-racism, anti-colonialism/decolonization, feminism, anti-capitalism, queer and trans liberation struggles, issues in disability and Madness, among other social justice struggles.

Toronto is home to dynamic Indigenous, and Asian and Black diasporic communities. We believe that increased representation of and by these communities will positively contribute to our university and student body. For this position, the School of Social Work especially encourages applications from scholars who identify as Asian, Black, or Indigenous, and whose scholarship encompasses these identities.

While all applications are welcome, the School of Social Work particularly is seeking applicants whose scholarship focuses on 2SLGBTQI+ (trans/Two Spirit especially) people and/or older adults. We are seeking a colleague whose scholarship addresses resistance to transmisia/Two Spirit discrimination and/or older adult ageism, and social work practice with 2SLGBTQI+ (trans/Two Spirit especially) peoples and/or older adults and communities, and who will bring that experience to the curriculum, by assisting in the curriculum review and development and enhancing relationships with communities and agencies that centre 2SLGBTQI+ (trans/Two Spirit especially) peoples and/or older adults. Scholarship that employs social justice/transformative-focused quantitative methodologies will be considered an asset.

The successful candidate will engage in a combination of teaching, scholarly research or creative activity and service duties, while maintaining an inclusive, equitable, and collegial work environment across all activities. Responsibilities will include teaching; contributing their area of scholarship to the curriculum (as described above); and engaging in collegial service that contributes to the continuing success of the School of Social Work, the Faculty and the University.

Candidates must have an earned doctorate degree or be close to completion (within two years of the employment start date), with at least one degree being in social work (MSW and/or BSW). Candidates must demonstrate social work practice experience; evidence of an emerging program of research; high-quality teaching; and a commitment to the following: community engagement; collegial work environment; making learning accessible, inclusive and equitable for a diverse student population; field education and practice; and service that enhances the collegial governance of the School. Familiarity with online/hybrid learning and teaching is an asset.

Our committee recognizes that scholars have varying career paths and that career interruptions can be part of an excellent academic record. Candidates are encouraged to provide any relevant information about their experience and/or career interruptions.

This position falls under the jurisdiction of the Toronto Metropolitan Faculty Association (TFA). Visit the TMU Faculty Affairs website to view the TFA collective agreement and a summary of TFA benefits.
