The Faculty of Science at the University of Calgary invites applications for a full-time Canada Research Chair (CRC) Tier II position in quantum computing in the area of Quantum Algorithms. The successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of Assistant Professor, and nominated for an NSERC CRC Tier II position, in the Department of Physics and Astronomy or the Department of Computer Science with cross appointments to related departments possible. This position has an anticipated start date of July 1, 2025 or later.

The successful candidate can join the Faculty of Science’s Institute for Quantum Science and Technology (https://iqst.ucalgary.ca/), which comprises ~20 faculty members and their research groups, and the Institute is a member of the Quantum Alberta consortium, which is a community of quantum scientists, technologists and engineers working in the Province of Alberta.

Applicants must have completed, or be near completion of, a doctoral degree in a discipline relevant to their proposed field of study in quantum and/or quantum-inspired algorithms and computational complexity. They must have a strong record of impactful research in their field of expertise and demonstrate an ability to teach at the university level. The University of Calgary adheres to the principles of the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment and strives to evaluate research impact holistically that explicitly considers the quality, significance, and societal impact including knowledge translation and mobilization.

The successful candidate will be able to interact positively within the diverse research environment within the Faculty of Science, and the University of Calgary, and take advantage of access to state-of-the-art core infrastructure. The candidate is expected to establish collaborative opportunities to enhance and develop either transdisciplinary or external partnerships.

Faculty members play an important role in teaching and research supervision of students in relevant undergraduate and graduate programs. The successful candidate will have plans to develop high-quality supervision or mentorship with a focus on preparing students for their desired future career. They will also be prepared to teach courses in their home department and/or related programs commensurate with their expertise and current teaching needs.

Tier II candidates are further expected to be excellent emerging world-class researchers who have demonstrated particular research creativity; have demonstrated the potential to achieve international recognition in their fields in the next five to ten years; have the potential to attract, develop and retain excellent trainees, students and future researchers; and be proposing an original, innovative research program of high quality. Tier II Chairs are tenable for five years and renewable once. Tier II Chairs are intended for emerging scholars with demonstrated potential to become outstanding and internationally-recognized researchers and leaders in their field. Candidates must have completed their PhD or equivalent, less than 10 years ago at the time of their nomination. Candidates who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree and who have had career breaks, such as maternity, parental, or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc., may have their eligibility for a Tier II Chair assessed through the program’s Tier II justification process. Research interruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic (e.g., closures) are recognized as, and may be counted as, an eligible delay (credited at twice the amount of time) beginning March 1, 2020.
