The incumbent will possess knowledge and skills in Indigenous community-based research and research coordination and/or project management. This role will work closely with the Kwiis hen niip Manager to ensure timelines and deliverables are met. They will be responsible for carrying out and overseeing a range of tasks to work towards Kwiis hen niip project aims; specific responsibilities are outlined below. This is a half-time role, entailing ~20 hours/ week; working hours are flexible but may require some evenings and weekends for community events with other flexible time-off to ensure that weekly hours are not more than 20 hours. This position requires occasional travel to remote communities, including overnight stays, to attend events, meetings, and community visits. All travel costs will be covered by the project.This position offers opportunities for specialized on-the-job research training, including hands-on experience with community-based research practices and culturally-grounded research. If necessary, support can also be provided to obtain certifications such as TCPS2 (Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans) and OCAP® (Ownership, Control, Access, and Possession).Organizational StatusThe vision of the UBC Department of Emergency Medicine is to be a provincially integrated Department committed to clinical and academic leadership in the creation and exchange of knowledge to promote excellence in emergency care. Our faculty members across the province have had an impressive record of research and discovery and in providing high-quality training in emergency care. Our research and innovation initiatives include fourteen successful programs related to prevention of emergencies, improving clinical care, and system improvements.This position belongs to the UBC Department of Emergency Medicine Kwiis hen niip (Change) project, which is addressing persisting gaps in emergency care in remote First Nations communities. The Kwiis hen niip research study is a 6-year (2020-2026) CIHR funded research study that recently received funding from UBC to extend the knowledge translation and scale up work for 3 more years (January 2025 – December 2027). The project started as a Nation-based project in Nuu-chah-nulth territories, involving a partnership between Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council, UBC Department of Emergency Medicine, First Nations Health Authority, Emergency Care BC, BC Emergency Health Services and four remote Nuu-chah-nulth Nations: Ahousaht, Hesquiaht, Kyuquot-Checleseht, and Tla-o-qui-aht). We are now embarking on the next phase of our project, which involves extending the work and what we have learned through the Kwiis hen niip Project to understand and advocate for better emergency care in remote First Nations communities across the entire province of BC.Relationships: This position reports to and is supported by the Kwiis hen niip Manager and the Project’s Nominated Principal Investigator. They will have frequent contact and collaboration with the Manager, the Project’s Nominated Principal Investigator, the Community Coordinator, the Postdoctoral Fellow, and the Graduate Research Assistant. Additional contacts include the Project’s Co-Principal Investigators/ Co-Investigators, representatives from collaborating organizations, and key contacts from participating First Nations communities.Work PerformedSupport the project’s leads in overall planning and coordination of project objectives, providing research support and administrative support to team members as needed.Represent Kwiis hen niip and liaise with community representatives (e.g. elected chiefs, health leadership, Elders, traditional healers) to help build and maintain positive relationships, understand the project, and engage community participation.Plan and coordinate travel with project team members and community partners for approved community visits, events and research activities.Coordinate data collection processes, supporting recruitment, focus group facilitation, data entry and cleaning, analysis, and reporting of insights.Keep detailed and organized records of meeting minutes and notes from community visits.Organize and ethically store all project files, in accordance with data management protocols.Synthesize information into accessible, accurate, and engaging reports and presentations.Help monitor project progress and project budget.Support preparation of progress reports for study partners and granting agencies.Support preparation of abstracts, posters, presentations, manuscripts, reports, and lay summaries for scientific dissemination and public relations; collecting and organizing data, drafting sections, and reviewing materials.Respond to inquiries about the project (e.g. from community contacts, stakeholders, the press).Complete other duties or tasks as may be requested by the Kwiis hen niip Manager and the Project’s Nominated Principal Investigator.Consequence of Error/JudgementThe Kwiis hen niip Project Coordinator is required to participate in and conduct all position-related tasks in a professional and ethical manner and to maintain strict confidentiality where required. Inappropriate disclosure of participants’ personal information would contravene privacy legislation and could result in legal action. Establishing effective working relationships within the team and with other study stakeholders is essential in the success of the research study. Inability to foster effective working relationships or engage in appropriate consultation with project leads and designated community representatives may affect the integrity of the study and the successful and timely completion of the research study.Supervision ReceivedThis position reports to and is supported by the Kwiis hen niip Manager and the Project’s Nominated Principal Investigator, who will provide close supervision and training during the initial period of orientation. Once orientation is complete, the individual should be able to work with basic supervision, although help will always be available for problem solving.Supervision GivenThe position will oversee and support the Graduate Research Assistant. This includes assigning tasks, offering mentorship and training as needed, reviewing deliverables, and fostering a collaborative working relationship to support the successful completion of research activities and community engagement initiatives.Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.– Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own– Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusionPreferred QualificationsEducation & Experience:
- Preference will be given to Indigenous applicants

- Experience working in a community-based setting or Indigenous-led research environment with established knowledge of cultural safety
- Experience with research coordination and/or project coordination is an asset

- Ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships with a variety of allied professionals, formal and informal community leaders, and First Nation knowledge keepers and/or Elders
