The Department of Psychiatry, in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia (UBC), invites applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE) faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure track) or Associate Professor (tenure) in the Northern Medical Program (NMP). The ideal candidate will be a clinician scientist with expertise in the area of mental health and addictions services research in Indigenous community and/or rural settings. This position will primarily be based at the distributed NMP site in Prince George, BC, at the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC), one of the UBC Faculty of Medicine affiliated institutions and as such, the successful incumbent will be required to reside in Northern British Columbia.

The UBC Department of Psychiatry consists of more than 950 members, including academic and clinical faculty, trainees, students and staff. The Department’s medical education programs are some of the most widely distributed within the Faculty of Medicine consisting of faculty appointees and trainees located across the Province within each of British Columbia’s Health Authorities.
The NMP is a distributed site of UBC’s Faculty of Medicine MD Undergraduate Program, delivered in partnership with UNBC. The NMP is focused on training physicians from and for northern and rural communities in alignment with the social accountability principle of the UBC Faculty of Medicine strategic plan. Along with the Vancouver Fraser Medical Program, the Island Medical Program and the Southern Medical Program, this distributed medical program was the first of its kind in North America and has proven to be a highly successful model of distributed education.
This position will report to the Head of the UBC Department of Psychiatry; the Head will consult with the Regional Associate Dean, Northern BC. The successful candidate will be expected to work collaboratively with other clinicians and scientists to develop and lead a mental health and addictions research portfolio in Northern BC. Research interests with a focus on access to care, early intervention, and health of populations in rural and remote areas and Indigenous communities would be an asset. The successful candidate will also be expected to actively participate in the teaching activities of the Department of Psychiatry, as well as provide mentorship and training to undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate learners, as well as to clinicians with research interest in Northern BC for the NMP, Prince George Psychiatry and Family Medicine Programs.
The successful candidate will hold an MD with FRCPC or equivalent qualifications in Psychiatry, and have a demonstrated interest in Indigenous community health and/or rural health settings. Applicants must be eligible to register with the College of Physicians and Surgeons within 3 years of appointment. Clinical experience demonstrating the potential to make a significant contribution to patient care and psychiatric education is required. While the primary employer for this position is UBC and a UBC work permit application will be facilitated through the University, foreign academics will be required to independently obtain a work permit with the Northern Health Authority.
• Assistant Professor, TT: The successful candidate will have demonstrated evidence of ability in teaching and scholarly activity.
• Associate Professor, T: The successful candidate will have demonstrated evidence of successful teaching and ability to direct graduate students, a growing body of productive scholarly activity, and must be willing to participate in the affairs of the Department and the University.
In addition, the successful candidate will demonstrate a willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own, and a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
The expected salary for this position is $160,000 – $170,000 per annum for Assistant Professor and $175,000 – $190,000 for Associate Professor.
