General Purpose

At the University of Guelph, our students benefit greatly from engaging directly in industries and communities where they can apply their learning in real-world contexts, develop essential employability skills, and gain a deeper understanding of the complex issues faced by employers and community organizations today.

The Experiential Learning Hub collaborates with industry and community partners in identifying experiential learning opportunities that serve as vehicles for the application of formal learning in real-world contexts, while addressing their priorities. The Co-operative Education program formally integrates a student’s academic studies with periods of work experience. Over 5,700 co-op students participate in over 60 co-op majors at the University of Guelph. Co-op Coordinators assume complete marketing responsibility and student advisement for co-op program(s) as assigned and actively recruit and engage employers to hire 700 – 2,000 co-op students each fall, winter, and summer semester. These activities raise the profile of the University of Guelph and guide student success in the Co-operative Education program.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Developing new and maintaining existing employer relationships to support and expand engagement with co-operative education and the University of Guelph
  • Providing advisement and guidance to co-op students in assigned programs on job search strategies, employability skills (professional and transferable) and career development while the student is seeking employment and while on a work term
  • Maintaining in-depth labour market insight, analyzing shifts in technology and economics
  • Marketing and promoting co-op and the University of Guelph throughout all sectors of the economy, trade associations, tradeshows
  • Conducting co-op work term site visits to monitor student learning and work performance; and ensuring that sufficient job quantity, diversity and experience levels are available for co-op students
  • Advising on issues related to employment barriers and issues of workplace accommodation, needs of a diverse client population (e.g., Indigenous, racialized, and LGBTQ2IA+ students and students with disabilities, etc.).
  • Preparing co-op students for their first work term. Responsible for developing and delivering recruitment preparation workshops and events each semester.
  • Assessing and providing feedback to students on their resumes, cover letters and interview skills.

Requirements 

  • An undergraduate degree in a related field
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ relevant experience in employer development, relationship management, marketing, cooperative education, experiential education, or career advising/coaching
  • Applicants should demonstrate excellent communication, marketing and account management, sales, and public relations skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion principles and have experience supporting diverse communities, including Indigenous people, women, newcomers, visible minorities, persons with disabilities, and persons of any sexual orientation or gender identity. 
  • Excellent time management skills, with the ability to prioritize and triage obligations.
  • Demonstrated experience utilizing data to inform decision-making. 
  • Ability to adhere to existing operational processes within a team. 
  • Must also demonstrate strong knowledge of relevant job markets for co-op programs and the ability to work well with diverse clients/stakeholders (i.e., employers, students, faculty).
  • Applicants should demonstrate the ability to coach, advise and problem-solve with various stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of cooperative education, career counselling, human resource practices, labour market analysis, and employment law is an asset.
  • A certificate from a recognized postgraduate program focusing on career development and/or adult education with a curriculum related to career planning, ethics, online course instructional design, and working with diverse populations is preferred.
  • Knowledge of the University’s academic programs and procedures is an asset.

There are 2 temporary full-time Co-op Coordinator positions available, one for each of the following co-op program areas: Engineering and Computing. Applicants should identify their program area of preference in their application package.
