Your opportunity:

Residing in the Office of the Vice Dean, Medical Education, the Office of Learner Affairs (OLA) is dedicated to working with and supporting learners from the Temerty Faculty of Medicine’s Undergraduate Medical Education (MD and MD/PhD), Postgraduate Medical Education, Medical Radiation Sciences, Physician Assistant, and Occupational Therapy programs to optimize the learning environment and experience at individual and systems levels, and enable learners’ development into aaccomplished health care professionals.

As PGME Accessibility Advisor, you will manage postgraduate medical education learner accommodation requests and needs by researching and recommending alternative approaches and possible accommodation solutions as part of the duty to accommodate. This includes writing confidential learner accommodation summaries, providing case management support, liaising with Office of Learner Affairs directors and program leaders to determine reasonable accommodations in accordance with the Ontario Human Rights Commission (OHRC) Guidelines on Accessible Education.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Applying the established Ontario Human Rights Commission (OHRC) Guidelines on Accessible Education (2004) to determine reasonable accommodations
• Developing accommodation plans for learners and researching and recommending alternative approaches and accommodation solutions as part of the duty to accommodate
• Providing case management support to learners requiring the coordination of multiple services
• Advising learners and/or staff on personal and family care issues by probing and providing a range of options and possible consequences
• Keeping well-informed on faculty requirements, the University structure, academic policies and procedures, and specific learning requirements within courses and programs
• Analyzing administrative processes and procedures and recommending changes for improvement
• Assessing needs and contributing to the development of accessibility guidelines and procedures
• Delivering presentations to promote programs, opportunities and/or initiatives

Essential Qualifications:

• Master’s Degree in Education, Psychology or Counselling and/or a relevant disability related field such as rehabilitation services, or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Minimum four years related experience of case management working with adults with mental health & learning disabilities
• Experience working with health professional learners in academic difficulty and from diverse educational and cultural backgrounds
• Demonstrated experience in assessing disability related needs and implementing support plans
• Experience dealing with persons in emotional distress, crisis or conflict
• Experience developing, implementing and monitoring accommodation plans for persons with disabilities and possessing a thorough understanding of disability issues
• An understanding of disability and social equity issues in the post-secondary environment
• Advanced proficiency with MS Office Suite
• Excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills
• Demonstrated ability to exercise patience, tact, judgment and discretion
• Skill in working with university-aged young adults, and individuals in crisis
• Ability to respond calmly and efficiently in crisis situations
• Must possess a commitment to the principles of equity and inclusion and be able to demonstratean understanding of the implications of disabilities as they relate to a student’s success at university and in a broader context
• Ability to work effectively both independently and within an inter-disciplinary team

Pay Scale Group & Hiring Zone: 

USW Pay Band 13 — $84,813. with an annual step progression to a maximum of $108,463. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
