The Department of Anatomy & Cell Biology at Western University invites applications for a probationary Teaching Scholar (TS) faculty position in the field of anatomical sciences education. This probationary appointment will be made at the rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor, depending on qualifications and experience. Appointments made at the rank of Assistant Professor will lead to consideration of continuing status and promotion to Associate Professor, TS, at the end of the probationary period (maximum 6 years). Appointments made at the rank of Associate Professor will lead to consideration of continuing status at the end of the probationary period (maximum 3 years). This position is expected to start July 1, 2025, and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
The ideal candidate will be a highly skilled educator who can teach in the anatomical sciences and desires protected time (e.g., 20%) for scholarship/research. Applications will be considered from qualified applicants with a PhD (or equivalent) degree, with a strong background and demonstrated excellence and innovation in both classroom and laboratory teaching of gross anatomy and one additional pillar of anatomical sciences (e.g., histology, embryology, medical imaging or neuroanatomy). Candidates will be expected to integrate the basic anatomical sciences into both clinical and research contexts, and coordinate/instruct in upper-year undergraduate and graduate courses in the basic sciences, medical and/or dental education curriculums. The successful candidate will have exceptional classroom communication skills and documented creativity in teaching complex anatomical concepts to advanced learners.
Candidates should have a demonstrated history of advancing the teaching of anatomical sciences with a track-record of disseminating educational innovations and scholarship, including peer-reviewed publications. The definition of research/scholarship in this context is purposely broad as both traditional and non-traditional programs of scholarship that advance the Department’s mission to enhance the scholarship of teaching and learning will be considered. For example, a successful candidate may have a scholarly research program that explores the use of artificial intelligence and imaging modalities to enhance the teaching of anatomical sciences. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to establish a coherent line of scholarly inquiry grounded in strong theoretical foundations, a well-justified methodological approach, and the potential to make significant contributions to educational knowledge. Training in educational theories and research methodologies would be a strong asset. In addition to leading a program of research or scholarship, the successful candidate will foster collaboration and supervise research projects for undergraduate and graduate students (including those in clinical anatomy and thesis-based programs). Through the mentorship and supervision of a diverse group of students, the successful candidate will be expected to develop a thriving, well-funded scholarly/research program.
