Result of Service
The Individual Contractor will contribute to the CEPA Programme of Work through research, content development, and logistical support. She/he will assist with the coordination with internal and external partners to facilitate implementation of CEPA activities. The Individual Contractor’s efforts will ensure the timely dissemination of high-quality communication products across various platforms, including social media, in alignment with the objectives of the Convention and its Protocols. Additionally, she/he will play a key role in supporting the successful execution of the International Day for Biological Diversity through effective outreach and communications initiatives.

Duties and Responsibilities
ORGANIZATIONAL SETTING The United Nations Environment Programme is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. At the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, world leaders agreed on a comprehensive strategy for ‘sustainable development’. The Convention on Biological Diversity was opened for signature in Rio in 1992. The Convention has 196 Parties and has three main objectives: the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the use of genetic resources. The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD) is located in Montreal and is administered by the United Nations Environment Programme. Its main tasks are to arrange for and service meetings of the Conference of the Parties, including preparation of pertinent documentation, operation of the central node of the clearing-house mechanism, liaison and coordination with other international bodies and processes and, in close collaboration with these partners, the provision of technical support for the effective implementation of the Convention. Duties and Responsibilities The Individual Contractor will support the implementation of the Communication, Education, and Public Awareness (CEPA) Programme of Work, contributing to initiatives aligned with the three objectives of the Convention and its Protocols, with a particular focus on the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF). Under the supervision of the Public Information Officer, the Individual Contractor will perform the following duties: • Assist in the drafting and development of information materials that support CEPA activities, particularly those related to the implementation of the GBF’s goals and targets. • Assist with the planning and execution of the outreach campaign for the International Day for Biological Diversity, ensuring alignment with the theme. • Contribute to the preparation of information materials for the Global Plan of Action on Education and Biodiversity, as outlined in Decision 16/10 adopted by the Conference of the Parties. • Draft official correspondence, including letters, emails, notifications, meeting minutes, and analytical reports. • Assist in the creation of engaging social media content in alignment with the overall communication strategy. • Perform other relevant duties as required.
Qualifications/special skills
Academic qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent is required. Courses in Social sciences and political sciences are desirable. Experience: A minimum of one year of working experience with organizing outreach campaigns, events or international meetings is required. Knowledge of the work of the Convention and its Protocols is desirable. Proficiency in using new technologies, web-based platforms and social media networks is desirable. Skills: Excellent computer skills are required, including the following: Microsoft Office, Adobe Illustrator (or equivalent), social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube. Strong writing and editing skills in English language along with well-developed editorial judgement is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of other United Nations languages is desirable. NOTE: “Fluency equals a rating of “fluent” in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of “confident” in two of the four areas.

Travel may be required during this contract period. Applicants should be Canadian residents or citizens or have permission to work in Canada.
