Expected prorated pay is $7,333.33/month or $88,000 / year.Job Summary:The Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology at the University of British Columbia will be hiring a Research Associate at 80% FTE.The research associate (RA) will work jointly with the research groups of Prof. James A. Russell and Prof. Pieter R. Cullis, with an 80% FTE appointment. The role is to function as a Senior Scientist to oversee and direct research and development efforts within these labs. Activities will include developing research plans, overseeing R&D efforts of trainees, and identifying, applying for and securing additional research funds through non-dilutive grant opportunities or other funding sources. This is a senior role that requires independence, leadership, and self-motivation with significant hands-on laboratory and project management experience.For more than fifty years, the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology has played an active and important role at UBC and in the greater scientific community. The Department is home to approximately 90 research laboratories from fifteen Departments organized into nine research clusters, fostering a strong foundation for innovation and collaborations. All members of the Department maintain active, well-funded research programs that encompass many areas of modern biochemistry, and molecular and structural biology. The Department hosts an active Graduate program with more than 90 students and offers over fifteen undergraduate courses and laboratory courses for honours, major and minor Undergraduate programs.Responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following:Russell Lab:Work with Drs. Russell and Brimacombe, and Russell Lab team to identify, prepare and submit applications for large grant funding opportunities (ie. CIHR project grants, Gates Foundation, etc.)Directly supervise trainees in Russell Lab in crafting detailed, rigorous and impactful experimental research plans.Meet weekly with Drs. Russell and Brimacombe to review progress, plan future activities and provide feedback on student progress.Assist in the creation and monthly review of a real time lab budget.Lead or co-lead the Russell lab weekly lab meetings and quarterly reviews of overarching Russell Lab Strategy and Strategic Plan.Cullis Lab:Supervise 1-2 working groups within the lab (3-5 people, composed of PDFs, graduate students, and undergraduate researchers and technicians) and direct scientific projects by developing experimental plans, critically analyzing data, generating technical documents and reports, and interfacing with collaborators, partners, or other outside parties.Manage a subset of collaborative projects with other labs, either within UBC or externally, including organizing meetings, developing experimental plans, and ensuring Cullis Lab project deliverables are met efficiently.Present key findings to internal (project teams) and external stakeholders.Additional tasks to be assigned as necessitated by day-to-day operations.Qualifications:PhD in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, Microbiology & Immunology, or a related disciplineDemonstrated record of 7+ years of leadership and direct supervisory experience in either academic or industrial settings, including directing R&D programs and fundraising effortsKnowledge on lipid nanoparticle or drug development and RNA molecular biology are strong assetsExpertise in infectious diseases with a focus on sepsis and other acute bacterial infections, immunology, cancer, or other related fields is requiredSignificant experience and demonstrated track record of success writing academic grants and project proposalsStrong written and oral communication skillsCandidates interested must apply via the .UBC – One of the World’s Leading UniversitiesAs one of the world’s leading universities, the University of British Columbia creates an exceptional learning environment that fosters global citizenship, advances a civil and sustainable society, and supports outstanding research to serve the people of British Columbia, Canada and the world.UBC hires on the basis of merit and is committed to employment equity.
