About the Position
The Faculty of Education invites applications for a one-year Instructional Limited Term Appointment in the Department of Educational Studies, teaching Dance Education (K–10) in the Teacher Education Program. The position involves teaching foundational courses in creative movement and arts-based pedagogies to teacher candidates across two divisions: Primary/Junior (including ELKP) and Junior/Intermediate.
The appointment, subject to budgetary approval, will commence July 1, 2026.
The target hiring range for this position is $95,000 to $120,000. The final salary will be determined based on relevant experience, internal equity and budget considerations.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will demonstrate expertise in Dance Education, specifically teaching creative movement through an arts-based pedagogical lens (e.g., drama, music, and/or visual arts) in Grades K–10. Familiarity with the Ontario Arts Curriculum for Grades 1–8 and 9–10 (2009) and the Ontario Kindergarten Program (2026) will be considered an asset.
Applicants will hold a completed doctorate in Dance Education, Educational Studies, or a closely related field (e.g., Creative Movement Pedagogies, Integrated Arts-based Pedagogies). Applications are also welcomed from doctoral candidates nearing completion (see Note 1) and from candidates whose expertise reflects PhD equivalency grounded in Indigenous knowledge systems (see Note 2).
Note 1: While applications from doctoral candidates nearing completion are welcome, the successful applicant must have completed all degree requirements in a relevant field by the start date of the appointment (July 1, 2026).
Note 2: In determining PhD equivalency for Indigenous knowledge, consideration will be given, but not limited to, demonstrated knowledge of Indigenous languages, customs, protocols, spirituality, traditions, practices, ceremonies, histories, and teachings. Such knowledge may be acquired through lived experience; sustained participation in Indigenous self-determination, governance, and cultural structures; and/or study and reflection with Indigenous Elders or Traditional Knowledge Carriers/Keepers.
The preferred candidate may also demonstrate:
- professional teaching experience in arts-based courses (e.g., drama education, music education, visual arts education in teacher education and elementary education settings [Grades K–10]);
- evidence of strong connections with local, national, and/or international organizations dedicated to the promotion of arts-based education.
Required Qualifications:
The successful candidate must have:
- a PhD or equivalent graduate degree in a relevant field (ABD is also acceptable);
- experience teaching dance education to K–10 teacher candidates within a university-based teacher education program;
- experience teaching creative movement through an arts-based lens in K–10 classroom settings, with particular strength in ELKP and Primary/Junior/Intermediate contexts;
- experience in university teaching and curriculum development in face-to-face and blended learning environments, particularly in arts-based pedagogies within teacher education programs;
- evidence of the ability to teach in inclusive, equitable, accessible, differentiated, and culturally-responsive ways, illustrating a commitment to decolonization, reconciliation, anti-racism, and social justice issues in teaching, research, and service.
Additional Preferred Qualifications:
The preferred candidate may also demonstrate:
- teaching experience in the Ontario context, Ontario College of Teachers certification (OCT), knowledge of the OCT’s Standards of Practice and Ethical Standards; and/or equivalent qualification and experience in a provincial/territorial context;
- Additional Qualification(s) in OCT Dance Specialist pathway (e.g., Part 1, Part 2, Part 3);
- familiarity with digital and multimodal teaching platforms (e.g., Brightspace, Google Slides, Canva, Microsoft Office Suite);
- engagement with Dance Education organizations at the local, provincial, and/or national level;
- research interests, scholarly activities, and teaching recognition, as appropriate to the Dance Education instructional appointment.
