The Academic Dean (0.6 FTE) serves as the Chief Academic Officer of Atlantic School of Theology (AST) and is a key member of the senior leadership team. The Dean holds primary responsibility for the academic life, quality, and integrity of AST and serves as a leadership role model within the AST community and in public-facing roles.
Guided by AST’s mission to serve Christ’s mission by shaping faithful and effective lay and ordained leaders, the Academic Dean collaborates closely with the President to establish and implement academic priorities as set by the university’s Senate and Board of Governors.
The Academic Dean participates in the Management Advisory Committee, collaborates across administrative units to ensure academic programs align with institutional operations, and serves as Secretary of Senate and Chair of Faculty Council. This position is not part of the AST Faculty Association.
Key Responsibilities
1. Academic Leadership and Program Quality
• Advance innovation in academic programming through collaboration, creativity, and ongoing quality improvement.
• Oversee academic quality assurance processes and program evaluations, ensuring compliance with accreditation and regulatory requirements.
• Oversee all academic programs of the university, including degree, non-degree, and continuing education offerings.
• Promote equitable, inclusive, and accessible academic practices.
2. Faculty Relations
• Support faculty in their research, professional development, teaching, and service.
• Serve on the administrative bargaining team during negotiations with the Faculty Association and ensure all work with ASTFA members is completed in accordance with the Collective Agreement.
• Oversee sessional instructor appointments.
• Manage faculty processes, including annual reviews, renewal, and promotion; teaching responsibilities and course releases; sabbatical applications, leaves, and vacation scheduling.
3. Administrative Leadership
• Share administrative leadership of the university with the President and the Management Advisory Committee.
• Academic department administration oversight, including the departmental budget and supervision of academic department staff.
• Support of library operations.
• Consult with Formation Directors to ensure formational program goals are met.
• Support community life, including summer and fall student orientation events and the worship life of the university.
• Ensure accessibility considerations are integrated into all academic processes.
4. Governance
• Manage Senate agendas with the Academic Office Coordinator and the President.
• Provide leadership to Senate committees, chairing or attending as appropriate.
• Attend Board of Governors meetings as a corresponding member and participate in Board committees as assigned.
• Facilitate communication and interpretation between Board, faculty, staff, and students.

• Earned doctoral degree.
• Demonstrated experience in academic administration.
