The successful candidate will be flexible and nimble, have the desire to constantly learn new things, be curious, be energetic, and dedicated to providing the best education experience for the students, while meeting the needs of the department, the clinical partners, and the patients who will be served by our students.Duties

  • Provides instruction to learners which include but are not limited to the following settings: classroom and laboratory, fieldwork/clinical teaching and supervision, electives, guest lectures, seminars, experience-based learning, distance and web-based delivery
  • Within the context of the MLS program, decides course content, course design, and instructional methodology and delivery of assigned courses
  • Within the context of the MLS program, decides learner evaluation methodologies for assigned course(s), monitors learner progress, and provides timely feedback for classroom, laboratory, and clinical
  • Ensures availability for learner consultation within and outside of scheduled class, laboratory, or clinical practicum times
  • Participates in inter-professional teaching activities
  • Provides instruction and contributes to content for incoming student orientation activities
  • Provides instruction, supervision and/or mentorship to learners involved in community engagement as part of their course requirements
  • Participates in scholarly teaching by remaining current and competent in the assigned course content, course design and instructor performance in the classroom or clinical/fieldwork setting
  • Collaborate with MLS faculty in the development of academic and clinical curricula
  • Coordinate and deliver courses in the MLS program
  • Develop and maintain robust and productive relationships with clinical and faculty partners
  • Monitor course content and curriculum to ensure continued relevance
  • Organize and coordinate lecture and laboratory schedules
  • Prepare and facilitate/present lectures
  • Prepare and facilitate laboratory sessions
  • Ensure maintenance of procedure manuals for student laboratories in coordination with the Laboratory Coordinators
  • Evaluate academic and practical proficiency of students
  • Prepare and grade examinations and assignments
  • Maintain records of student progress
  • Develop and maintain an active eClass and/or Canvas LMS site
  • Ensure timely ordering of relevant laboratory supplies in coordination with the Laboratory Coordinators
  • Ensure continuous learning in the field of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, including the ever-changing clinical landscape and adapt curriculum accordingly
  • Maintain connection with instructors in all years of the program to ensure optimization of curriculum development and delivery
  • Assist students requiring academic support.
  • Engage and lead Teaching Assistants in the facilitation of the development of laboratory skills in the year 2 students

Minimum Qualifications

  • Baccalaureate degree required
  • Recent clinical experience in Transfusion Science and/or Clinical Chemistry and/or clinical core lab
  • Experience in adult education
  • General, current Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) certification (maintained annually)
  • Current College of Medical Laboratory Technologist of Alberta (CMLTA) registration (maintained annually)
  • Completion of a Medical Laboratory Science or Technology program from an accredited educational institution
  • Familiarity with clinical laboratory practice
  • Outstanding critical thinking and organizational skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to adapt communication style and to collaborate with colleagues
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a high degree of emotional intelligence
  • Able to work effectively within teams/committees and provide constructive feedback to colleagues
  • Interest and/or experience in undergraduate education

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with undergraduate students
  • A Masters or PhD is an asset
