Over the past 20 years, the Common Law Section of the Faculty of Law at the University of Ottawa has become a national and global leader in many fields. position Purpose:

The Assistant Dean, Research is responsible for managing all facets of the research office at the Faculty of Law including human resources, budgets, pre-award management, marketing and promotion, postdoctoral fellows, visiting researchers, visiting professors (with a research agenda), identification of research prizes and support for promotion of candidates, and interface with the Graduate Studies Office.

Develop and implement medium to long-term strategies in relation to academic and non-academic research funding opportunities, partnership development, research communications and outreach activities, with a view to strategically leveraging and increasing research intensity and maintaining the position of the Faculty of Law as a world-class research institution.

The purpose of the role is to impact on the Faculty of Law’s ability to obtain and effectively manage external research funds entrusted to it, the ability of its faculty members to successfully fund and carry out their research programs, to enhance the image of the Faculty of Law as a research-intensive institution and to offer an enriching learning environment for graduate students.

In this role, your responsibilities will include:

• Provide strategic advice to Deans and Vice Deans on research planning, development, policy, funding, communications, and outreach to increase research intensity.
• Represent research interests in weekly leadership meetings and act as management representative, when necessary, at internal and external events.
• Advise on short-term and long-term grant funding opportunities and diversification of external research funds. Manage Faculty processes related to research grants development and submission. Initiate and manage collaborations between the Research Office (RO), the Faculty and the University finance teams to ensure proper management and access to research funds.
• Advise on career development related to research activities and facilitate networking opportunities, especially for new and early career professors.
• Create, implement and manage internal funding programs and research excellence awards to maximize research productivity.
• Lead discussions on strategic research priorities to align projects with various funding sources. Liaise with funding agencies, research development professionals (inside and outside the University of Ottawa) to gather information, influence future policies affecting management research and increase the competitiveness of the Faculty of Law research projects.

What you will bring:

• Post-graduate thesis-based degree, preferably in law or in social sciences from a recognized university. Evidence of past research publications is an asset.
• At least five years of relevant experience in finance, human and physical resources administration. Project management certification is an asset.
• Experience in communications strategies and coordination of research events.
• Experience of working in industry or tri-council agencies is an asset.
• Demonstrated ability to coordinate research development and administration; work with the academic community, including the ability to support the development of successful grant applications.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to effectively manage human resources.
• Strong knowledge of the role and purpose of research centres in an academic setting.
• Demonstrated ability to help faculty and graduate students to secure funding from academic funding agencies and other external funders.
• Demonstrated ability to create, maintain and build relationships and partnerships within the university and externally.
• Ability to apply marketing knowledge in the research sector.
• Bilingualism, French and English.
