Assistant or Associate Professor in Anatomic Pathology

The Department of Pathobiology at the University of Guelph invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level in Veterinary Anatomic Pathology. The anticipated start date for this appointment is before the end of 2025.

Applicants must have a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent veterinary degree, in addition to advanced training in veterinary anatomic pathology, board certification or eligibility for certification by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP) or European College of Veterinary Pathologists (ECVP), and eligibility for licensure by the College of Veterinarians of Ontario. The ideal candidate will have a doctoral degree, have experience teaching veterinary anatomic pathology, and have research experience. Other preferred qualifications include demonstrated potential to establish a competitive independent or collaborative research program. The applicant and their proposed research program should be suitable for the mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students in the area of pathology.

This position includes significant teaching and diagnostic responsibilities, and, as such, the successful applicant will need to have strong skills in diagnostic anatomic pathology and need to be an effective teacher in various aspects of anatomic pathology, including in rounds, small seminars, traditional lectures, and laboratories at the DVM/BSc and graduate levels. In addition, the successful applicant will supervise and contribute to the applied pathology training of graduate students in the diagnostic pathology service of the Department of Pathobiology. 

The new faculty member is expected to develop an independent research program suitable for graduate student education up to the doctoral level supported by independent and/or collaborative funding. Teaching and administrative duties will be adjusted in the first two years to permit the successful candidate to establish, sustain, and grow their research program. The new successful candidate is expected to have excellent written and oral communication skills as well as the ability to work effectively and consult with graduate students and faculty in other departments/units and with staff in the Animal Health Laboratory (AHL – https://www.uoguelph.ca/ahl).

The nine anatomic pathology faculty in the Department of Pathobiology and 9-12 anatomic pathology trainees enjoy a close relationship with clinical pathologists and trainees and have lively and stimulating case discussions in our large, shared microscope room. Diagnostic investigations are conducted in close collaboration with the AHL, a full-service AAVLD-accredited diagnostic laboratory. The AHL has a team of ten ACVP board-certified anatomic pathologists, and a histology laboratory that serves both the AHL and Department of Pathobiology.

The Department of Pathobiology has recognized strengths in anatomic, clinical, and comparative pathology, immunology, oncology, microbiology, and veterinary infectious diseases. The Department, together with the AHL, has a 13,000 square metre building housing well-equipped modern research and diagnostic laboratories. The College has a large veterinary teaching hospital (Health Sciences Centre), the Animal Cancer Centre and the Centre for Public Health and Zoonoses. In addition, researchers have access to nearby research stations suitable for conducting studies in a variety of domestic animals, on-campus housing for laboratory and production animals, including a level-2 animal isolation facility with capacity for large animals.
