The School of Environmental Sciences (SES) at the University of Guelph (UoG) invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level in apiculture/honey bee biology. The anticipated start date for this appointment is July 1, 2025, or another mutually agreed-upon date in 2025.
The successful candidate will hold a PhD in entomology, insect biology/ecology, or related discipline with experience in the field of honey bee research and preferably a minimum of 6 months of postdoctoral experience. The applicant must have a record of research excellence as demonstrated by scholarly publications in the area of apiculture and honey bee biology. Evidence supporting the potential for developing an extramurally funded research program is expected, as is evidence of strong teaching experience and good oral and written communication skills.
The candidate is expected to develop a robust, innovative, externally funded research program (both basic and applied) within the field of apiculture. Canadian beekeepers are experiencing high rates of honey bee colony losses resulting from the interaction of multiple stressors. Therefore, we seek candidates with expertise in aspects of apiculture and honey bee such as management, physiology, behaviour, pathology, nutrition, and breeding to develop practical solutions for the sustainable management of honey bees. Research collaborations with other faculty members within the UoG and elsewhere are also expected, as well as outreach and engagement with relevant stakeholders in Ontario, such as the beekeeping industry and the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness.
The candidate will teach courses that consider both the expertise of the new faculty member and the needs of the School of Environmental Sciences (SES). This would include the undergraduate course Apiculture and Honey Bee Biology (ENVS2210), an additional undergraduate-level course, as well as one graduate course. Supervision, mentoring and training of undergraduate and graduate students, as well as other highly qualified personnel, is expected.
The successful candidate will also participate in committees within the SES and at the college and University levels. Involvement with the beekeeping industry of Ontario is required, as well as engagement with relevant provincial and national stakeholders are key components of this position, and the successful candidate will be involved in directing the new Honey Bee Research Centre.
