The School of Theatre, English and Creative Writing (SOTEC) at the University of Guelph invites applications from Indigenous scholars/writers for a tenure-track position in Creative Writing and English at the Assistant Professor level. The successful candidate will support our current and future creative writing offerings across various genres and teach courses in literatures of Canada and/or Turtle Island in our literary studies program. The anticipated start date for this appointment is July 1, 2025, or another mutually agreed-upon date in 2025.
We welcome applications from individuals with a variety of qualifications including, but not limited to, an MFA or graduate degree in Creative Writing, or a PhD in English Literature, Literary Studies, or a related discipline with expertise in literatures of Canada and/or Turtle Island and Inuit Nunangat, and a strong background and record of publications in any genre of creative writing. Outstanding candidates without a PhD or MFA will be considered if they possess an equivalent combination of education and experience. An undergraduate degree is required. Demonstrated experience teaching university courses in both fields, at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels, is preferred. Candidates must also demonstrate an active research profile in literary studies and/or creative practice and present evidence of ongoing research and creative activity.
The successful candidate will also demonstrate practical experience in ethical, inclusive, anti-racist, anti-oppressive, and decolonial recording practices that emphasise community-engaged learning. In this tenure-track position, the successful candidate will teach a 3 + 2 load; with the preponderance of teaching falling into either field in accordance with our teaching needs. The position also offers the possibility of graduate teaching in both programs and the possibility of supervision of MA and PhD candidates in English and MFA candidates in Creative Writing. The faculty member will also serve on the CRWR or ENGL curriculum committee and/or assume other service roles as per faculty position requirements.
Both Creative Writing and English are robust programs in the College of Arts with solid projections for continued growth and success. Creative Writing courses and English courses are highly invested in experiential learning and socially engaged learning, offering practical and creative knowledge-building to foster successful transition from the academic environment to the professional world. The School of Theatre, English and Creative Writing is a hub for disciplinary and interdisciplinary study and research at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and SOTEC faculty often teach and research across our various disciplines. Our programs are also linked to various inter and intra-disciplinary programs and practices, including Culture and Technology Studies; Black Canadian Studies; and Sexualities, Genders and Social Change. SOTEC is home to creative practice, research-creation, and advanced research and attracts a steady stream of graduate students.
