The School of Indigenous Governance (IGOV) is Canada’s leading school for the advancement of Indigenous knowledges, creativity, and activism. Our graduate programs support the training and education of future Indigenous leaders and non-Indigenous allies and accomplices through innovative models of governance and nationhood that are grounded in Indigenous knowledge, methods and pedagogies, community-based research practices, and intersectional, critical, and Indigenous feminist approaches. IGOV offers a graduate Certificate in Indigenous Nationhood (IN Cert), a Master of Arts in Indigenous Governance (MAIG), a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) and several undergraduate courses focusing on Indigenous Governance. Our programming is recognized worldwide for its accountability and relevance to Indigenous communities. IGOV graduates are employed in academic professions, research and policy analysis positions, and as leaders in community and government organizations.
Committed to Indigenous governance that is relational, IGOV strongly encourages feminist and/or queer interdisciplinary research methods, critical inquiry, and diverse theoretical perspectives at local and/or global scales. IGOV defines equity through an intersectional lens that is reflected in pedagogy, research, service, and lived experience. We encourage candidates to express how they align with and advance these commitments. In accordance with the university’s equity plan and pursuant to Section 42 of the BC Human Rights code, preference will be given to members of the following designated group: Indigenous Peoples. Requirements
The successful candidate will have a PhD (or will have one in hand soon after starting the position); in exceptional circumstances a candidate with equivalency of Indigenous knowledge will be considered. The successful candidate will be an emerging world-class researcher in a field related to Indigenous governance and who complements existing research strengths and priorities in the School. They will demonstrate evidence of written and/or creative work that is original and innovative, and demonstrates a commitment to Indigenous and community-engaged methodologies, research, scholarly, and/or creative activities grounded in local and/or global lands and waters. The successful candidate will have a record or demonstrate promise of teaching excellence within the interdisciplinary field of Indigenous Governance, Indigenous Nationhood, and/or Indigenous feminisms. The successful candidate will show ability or potential to teach graduate level courses, and recruit, mentor, and supervise MA and PhD students. We are seeking a colleague who can work with students with diverse disciplinary methods, training, and approaches, abilities, and backgrounds and who has a commitment to diverse Indigenous pedagogies, with a focus on land-based, community-engaged pedagogies and practices. We seek a colleague with a record or promise of academic service as well as service to diverse Indigenous communities.
The candidate’s qualifications, experience, and overall market demand will determine a candidate’s final salary offer. The salary for this position is $109,500 – $135,200. UVic is committed to offering an equitable and competitive salary, inclusive of a generous benefits package, eligible leaves and pension plan.
