Description
The Department of Philosophy in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Calgary invites applications for a three-year limited term position at the rank of Assistant Professor. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2026.
This position builds upon the Faculty of Arts’ strategic priority area of digital futures, with all subfields that address this subject area open to consideration. Examples of specific areas of research include, but are not limited to, the philosophy of artificial intelligence and Large Language Models, the ethics of digital privacy and surveillance, the epistemology of groups and communities, the spread of misinformation, and the impact of big data on science and society.
The appointee will be expected to maintain an active research program while contributing to the department’s undergraduate and graduate teaching. This will include contributing to the department’s extensive extant undergraduate offerings as well as developing new courses. The appointee will also be expected to offer graduate seminars and supervise graduate students in their area(s) of research expertise.
The usual teaching assignment for research-teaching stream faculty members is four courses per year.
The successful candidate should hold a PhD in philosophy or be on track to receive one no later than July 1, 2026. They will have a demonstrated track record of research excellence as shown by publications in high quality journals, peer reviewed presentations, a writing sample submitted with the application, and/or scholarships and grants. The Department values public facing and community engaged scholarship and encourages applicants to discuss these activities in their applications. The successful candidate will also have a record of teaching excellence as shown by, for example, teaching materials developed for their classes, student outcomes, institutional recognition of teaching effectiveness, participation in pedagogical development activities, peer evaluations of teaching, and/or student evaluations of teaching.
