The Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Regina invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the field of Critical Minerals with a start date as early as July 1, 2025.
A global transition to clean-energy technologies has been driving increased demand for critical minerals. In 2021, the Canadian Government released a list of 31 minerals considered to be “critical” to this transition and economic security. Similarly, the Province of Saskatchewan has made critical minerals a key focus of the provincial growth plan. The new position aims to further foster our research and teaching in critical minerals.
We seek an innovative geoscientist with a proven record of research activity on critical minerals in any of, but not limited to, the following areas: economic geology, mineralogy, petrology, structural geology, geochemistry, and secondary recovery or novel sources for critical minerals. It is expected that the successful candidate will develop a novel, externally funded research program, with impacts at both the national and international level. The successful candidate is also expected to commit to inclusive teaching and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students, other highly qualified personnel, and demonstrate excellence or potential for excellence in teaching. A Ph.D. in Earth Sciences or Geology is required at the time of appointment, and early-career applicants are encouraged to apply. Those with relevant post-doctoral or industrial research experience may use those experiences to demonstrate their research success in critical minerals.
The Department of Earth Sciences is one of six departments in the Faculty of Science. As a small, dynamic unit it is recognized for its excellence in research, as well as high-calibre undergraduate and graduate programs in Geology and Environmental Geoscience. Our department includes nine tenured or tenure-track geoscientists and two lab instructors who have fostered relationships with industry and various provincial and federal agencies.
A complete application should include: i) a cover letter; ii) a detailed curriculum vitae; iii) a summary of past research achievements and future research plans focused on critical minerals of no more than two pages; iv) a statement of teaching philosophy of no more than two pages; v) copies of two recent publications; and vii) contact information for three references. Applicants should consider equity, diversity, and inclusion in both their research and teaching statements.
Applications received through the eRecruit portal before the closing date (March 28, 2025) will be considered, with interviews for selected candidates planned for mid- to late- April 2025. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents of Canada will be given priority.
