Acknowledging that UPEI is located on the unceded land of the Mi’kmaq Nation, of the Wabanaki Confederacy, in the traditional district of Epekwitk, Environmental Studies in the Faculty of Science at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) welcomes applications from exceptional candidates for a tenure-track faculty appointment at the Assistant Professor level. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the undergraduate Bachelor of Environmental Studies (BES) degree program and the soon-to-be launched Master of Cleantech Leadership and Transformation (MCLT) degree program.
Environmental issues typically do not respect traditional academic boundaries; instead, they are best addressed through a combination of scientific, technical, and social perspectives. As an interdisciplinary liberal arts and science program, the BES at UPEI provides students with the opportunity to integrate knowledge across academic fields and analyze current environmental concerns. In the classroom, field, and community, students are challenged to lead the way in finding innovative solutions and make a positive impact toward sustainability personally, locally, and globally.
Housed in the Faculty of Graduate Studies, the MCLT is an innovative transdisciplinary graduate program that aims to educate and cultivate transformative leaders who bridge traditional and emerging knowledge systems and drive cleantech innovation for a sustainable future. The MCLT’s first cohort is expected to begin in Fall 2025.
The anticipated start date of this appointment is July 1, 2025. Appointment rank, step and salary are commensurate with credentials and experience, and subject to final budgetary approval.
The successful candidate will be expected to:
Teach undergraduate courses in the Environmental Studies program (~half of their teaching assignments);
Teach graduate courses in the Cleantech program (~half of their teaching assignments). Undergraduate- and graduate-level teaching will focus on the areas of environmental science, sustainability, cleantech, climate change science and energy.
Have a commitment to experiential education and implementing inquiry-based learning in the classroom;
Contribute to ongoing curriculum development in both ES and MCLT programs;
Collaborate in interdisciplinary teams across the MCLT faculty;
Work in conjunction with Cleantech Academy staff and the Faculty of Graduate Studies. The candidate may also act as Academic Director of the MCLT.
Maintain an active research program and contribute to both Faculty and University service.
Demonstrate a commitment to Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Decolonization and Accessibility (EDIDA) and to advancing reconciliation through higher education.
Context:
Prince Edward Island (PEI) is dedicated to becoming Canada’s first province to reach net zero by 2040, being a sustainable leader, and working towards a brighter future. The path to reaching net zero requires knowledge, skills, innovation, collaboration, leadership, and initiative. As part of PEI’s dedication to this initiative, The Cleantech Academy was created. A partnership between the Government of Prince Edward Island, Holland College, and UPEI, the Academy’s mission is to train leaders and innovators who will drive the transition to net zero emissions through education, research, and hands-on experience. UPEI’s MCLT program works in collaboration with the Cleantech Academy and will operate from the Cleantech Innovation Centre in Georgetown, PEI. This state-of-the-art facility will serve as a hub for learning, collaboration, and real-world problem-solving in sustainability.
UPEI is recognized as a leading, innovative centre of excellence in learning, teaching, scholarship, and research. While it is strongly connected to the vibrant social and cultural environment of Prince Edward Island, it enjoys a reputation that extends far beyond the Island’s shores. UPEI is committed to Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Decolonization and Accessibility (EDIDA) and believes in providing a positive learning and working environment where every person feels empowered to contribute.
The University is in the provincial capital of Charlottetown, a bustling tourist destination that boasts the amenities of a much larger city, including excellent theatre, galleries, music, and dining possibilities. A province-wide hiking and biking trail runs right along the UPEI campus, and the National Park beaches and world-famous golf courses are a short drive away. Charlottetown and its surrounding communities offer charming housing options, a low crime rate, and a semi-rural lifestyle that is second-to-none.
Qualifications:
Successful candidates must have earned a doctoral degree in Environmental Studies, Environmental Sciences, Geography or a closely related field and have a strong track record of interdisciplinary research in sustainability, cleantech, environmental innovation, or related fields. They should also have a commitment to and/or experience with experiential learning or inquiry-based learning in the classroom. Postdoctoral and/or industrial experience, or skills gained through collaborative work with industry; collaborative R&D projects will be considered an asset.
