We are seeking to hire a cohort of scholars whose research advances the discipline of sociology, enhances in complementary ways the strategic focus of our department on systemic injustice and structural harm, and contributes to standing of our department nationally and internationally. We especially welcome applications from researchers who examine systemic injustice and structural harm as intersectional and global in nature. Additionally, we are seeking to recruit at least one scholar who can teach courses and supervise research in statistics and advanced quantitative analysis at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The Department is also home to a popular undergraduate major program in Law & Society, and if relevant, applicants should indicate whether and how their training and skills might support that program.

These positions will fit within the Faculty of Arts strategic priorities: Justice, Equity and Transformation; and Connection, Community and Culture. Applicants will be expected to make meaningful contributions to one or more of the University of Calgary’s commitments to Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Access (EDIA), Indigenization, transdisciplinary research and community-centered research and practice.

The successful candidates must:
• Have a PhD in Sociology, conferred before 1 July 2026
• Provide evidence of commitment and ability to secure external research funding
• Have a record of publication and research impact commensurate with career stage
• Demonstrate a compelling research trajectory aligned with the position description
• Show teaching effectiveness at the post-secondary level commensurate with career stage and a commitment to professional development in postsecondary teaching and learning
• Have a record of engagement in activities promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion

Description of Positions
The workload for these research-stream positions will be 40% research, 40% teaching, and 20% administration/service. Successful applicants are expected to maintain an active research program, regularly seek and obtain external funding, supervise and mentor graduate and undergraduate students in various roles and capacities, and produce impactful research. The Department of Sociology is a research-intensive department with high standards in teaching. We offer undergraduate, MA and PhD degrees in Sociology and an undergraduate degree in Law and Society. Faculty members in the department must be prepared to teach core courses in sociology in the undergraduate program, graduate courses, and large-enrollment undergraduate courses open to students throughout the University. Successful applicants will also be expected to consistently contribute to affairs of the department, Faculty of Arts, and University through collective governance processes, and advance the profession and discipline.
