The Role

This is an outstanding opportunity to join a thriving bio-pharmaceutical company working across a broad spectrum of the company providing multifaceted operational, commercial, and health compliance legal advice. This position will provide legal support to Gilead Sciences Canada, Inc. located in Mississauga, Ontario (“Gilead Canada”) and from time-to-time Gilead’s manufacturing operations located in Edmonton, Alberta.

You will provide expert advice and counseling to the Canadian business on a broad array of strategic and tactical projects within a highly regulated environment. This role is responsible for providing legal and compliance support to business partners in various departments across the organization, such as Sales & Marketing, Medical Affairs, Public Affairs, Commercial Operations and Market Access. The ideal candidate will have prior experience counseling prescription drug companies on legal issues relating to advertising and promotion, scientific exchange, and interactions with health care professionals, though this is not a prerequisite.

How you will ‘Create Possible’

  • Draft, review, and negotiate various commercial agreements including service agreements, distribution / supply agreements, research agreements, consulting agreements, and licenses and collaboration agreements. Create new template agreements and where necessary review existing agreements to clarify / clean-up agreement structures, track outstanding agreements and amendments to ensure timely execution, and follow-up with customers or vendors on behalf of Gilead to move deals forward.

  • Advise business partners on various commercial and medical initiatives in a way that advances the company’s strategy while addressing legal risks and protecting the company’s integrity and reputation.

  • Act as a subject matter expert on matters relating to healthcare law and related business operations and stay abreast of evolving healthcare legislation and regulations.

  • Share information and knowledge through group presentations and individual discussions with peers and managers

Knowledge, Experience and Skills

  • Requires a Juris Doctorate and called to the Bar of Ontario.

  • 6+ years of experience.

  • Outstanding ability to effectively communicate sound legal advice to lawyers and non-lawyers alike, coupled with a strong understanding of business needs.

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Experience advising on statutes, regulations, guidance documents, and ethical standards governing the pharmaceutical industry including the Food and Drugs Act & Regulations, anti-bribery laws, privacy laws, Competition Act, patent laws, PAAB’s Code of Advertising Acceptance, IMC Code of Ethical Practices.

  • Proficiency in technology tools used by the Legal Department including imanage, Apttus, Team Connect, and Microsoft Teams is helpful.

  • Self-starter and life-long learner with a strong work ethic and excellent interpersonal skills who enjoys working collaboratively and cross-functionally on teams, as well as independently.
