ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF PRACTICE (COUNSELLING PSYCHOLOGY)
The Faculty of Education at Simon Fraser University seeks applications for a full-time continuing Associate Professor of Practice to join the core faculty for the Counselling Psychology program.
We seek an experienced Counsellor Educator who will take on a leadership role at the Surrey Community Counselling Centre (SCC). The SCC provides a purpose-designed training and research site where clinical faculty of Counselling Psychology directly supervise master’s program graduate trainees while they offer service to members of the public. In the same space, faculty conduct and supervise research into counselling and counsellor supervision. The successful candidate will oversee all SCC operations and the program’s clinical training at the SCC, including clinical training courses and practicum. In this role, they will lead the further development of clinical supervision, clinical counselling (psychotherapy) practice, applied counselling research, teaching, and community engagement in connection to SFU Surrey Community Counselling. We seek a candidate with experience and vision to integrate research and evaluation into the supervision, training and services offered at the SCC. The position offers the successful candidate the scope to advance excellence in counsellor supervision and education.
Anticipated start is July 2025
QUALIFICATIONS
• Doctoral degree in Counselling Psychology or related field
• Registration with BC College of Psychologists, or eligibility to register, or Certified Supervisor with CCPA or BCACC
• Minimum 5 years clinical practice with children, youths, adults, older adults, and families
• Minimum 5 years of experience conducting clinical supervision and teaching graduate students in a counselling program
• Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion through clinical, teaching, and supervision practices
• Capacity to practice and supervise from a multicultural social justice perspective
• Prior experience supervising students working with clients of diverse, under-served, marginalized and equity-seeking backgrounds including indigenous, newcomer and 2SLGBTQI+ clients
• Thorough knowledge of ethical principles, guidelines and regulations governing counselling practice provincially and nationally
• Experience developing, delivering, evaluating, and/or researching psychotherapy programs and services for individuals, families, or groups from a counselling psychology approach
• Collegiality and ability to work closely and collaboratively with an established community of scholarship and practice
• Demonstrated commitment to program priorities of decolonization, reconciliation, and indigeneity
• Able to contribute to Faculty priorities of Equity, Indigeneity, and Inquiry
ASSETS
• Knowledge of community and school based mental health, and experience in building strong collaborative relationships within the mental health ecosystem of social, community, and health services and schools
• Experience with telehealth and technology related to clinical service and supervision (video recording, schedule management software)
• Experience managing the operations of a counselling center or practice
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Teach clinical skills courses offered at the SCC (4 courses/year or equivalent).
• Ensure clinical training programs offered through the SCC provide safe, ethical, and effective learning for student-trainees as well as a high standard of care to clients.
• Ensure that all services and activities of the SCC comply with ethical standards and legal requirements associated with professional counselling.
• Directly supervise counselling trainees as they conduct psychoeducation and psychotherapy individually or in groups with children, youth, adults, and families at the Surrey Community Counselling Centre.
• Lead evaluation of clinical training program and clinic services.
• Maintain, evaluate, and refine clinic programs, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance with legal and ethical standards and foster excellence in psychotherapy and training.
• Oversee the daily operations of the SCC including clinical training, client services and applied clinical research. These responsibilities include:
o training clinic staff
o liaising with referral partners
o overseeing or conducting screening and intake of clients to ensure clients appropriate to a clinical training centre are selected
o maintaining appropriate records for clients and trainees
• Foster and maintain strong relationships with community stakeholders, including Surrey School District, community agencies and schools that serve as referral partners and practicum sites.
• Collaborate with faculty in the Counselling Psychology program to advance research and scholarly activity at the SCC to promote excellence in counsellor education, counsellor supervision or counselling practice.
• Contribute to program operations and development to promote alignment of the program’s clinical and academic components, ensuring the program continues to meet or exceed standards of professional counselling.
• Service to the Education Community.

Faculty salaries at SFU are based on the salary scales bargained between the University and the SFU Faculty Association. A reasonable estimate of the salary range for a continuing full-time Associate Professor of Practice is $130,142-$155,584.
