Campus: St. George (Downtown Toronto)

Description:

The Department of Social Justice Education (SJE) at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE), University of Toronto invites application for a full-time tenure stream position at the rank of Associate Professor with a specialization in Queer Studies and Social Justice Education. The appointment will commence on July 1, 2025, or shortly thereafter.

Applicants must have earned a PhD, EdD, or equivalent doctoral degree in Education or a closely related field with a focus on queer/gender/sexuality studies. We seek to recruit a scholar with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching focused on 2SLGBTQI studies in relation to social justice education. We especially welcome applicants whose work in 2SLGBTQI studies emphasizes one or more of the following: decolonization, Indigenous feminisms, queer of colour critique, critical migration studies, and/or social and political movements. Applicants must demonstrate how their academic work can be engaged in education and educational research, broadly conceived, including out-of-school contexts.

We seek candidates with a strong social justice orientation whose research and teaching interests complement and enhance the department’s current research and teaching strengths. We especially welcome those who write about and research political and cultural contexts of anti-racist practice, as well as Indigenous lands, waters, and life, with accountability to specific places and communities. The successful candidate will have an established international reputation and will be expected to sustain and lead innovative and independent research, and to maintain an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program.

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence which can be demonstrated by a record of sustained high-impact contributions and publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, and other noteworthy activities that contribute to the visibility and prominence of the discipline, as well as strong endorsements from referees.

Evidence of excellence in teaching at the university level is required, as demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, and a teaching dossier submitted as part of the application (including required materials outlined below), as well as strong letters of reference. We expect applicants to articulate their vision for graduate teaching and supervision in their teaching statement. The successful candidate will be committed to the academic success of all our students and foster an environment that acknowledges, encourages, and celebrates diversity and difference.

Other responsibilities of the position include teaching and supervising a diverse body of students in SJE’s graduate degree programs, service to SJE and to OISE, and working collaboratively with related units across OISE and the University of Toronto. It is expected that the successful candidate will work effectively, respectfully, and collaboratively in diverse and inclusive settings.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The Department of Social Justice Education offers MA, MEd, PhD, and EdD degrees in Social Justice Education in addition to participating in several collaborative specializations. Our department meaningfully contributes to these broader conversations while also maintaining a distinctive place in the field through our interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary focus in the humanities and social sciences. SJE supports knowledge, skills, and approaches that are commonly at the edges of mainstream disciplinary educational research and pedagogy.
