The School of Biomedical Engineering (SBME) at the University of British Columbia (UBC) is a partnership between the Faculties of Applied Science and Medicine, established in 2017. The School is a nucleus for education and training, research, and innovation in biomedical engineering, creating new knowledge, new academic and training programs, and fostering translation and innovation. Its vision is to transform health and healthcare for all, achieved through innovative research and education at the convergence of engineering, medicine and biology. BC Cancer’s mission is to reduce the burden of cancer in British Columbia. Its mandate covers the full spectrum of cancer care from prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, research and education to supportive and palliative care. BC Cancer has internationally recognized research programs conducted at the BC Cancer Research Institute (BCCRI) and its 6 regional cancer centres. The BCCRI is a UBC affiliated research institute with a long-standing tradition of cutting-edge research in cancer biology, stem cell research, medical physics and radiation oncology, population health, genomics and molecular diagnostics, clinical trials, molecular imaging, and innovative therapeutics.
As the holder of the Dr. Connie Eaves Chair in Cancer Stem Cell Research, the successful candidate will develop and lead an innovative research program focused on understanding cancer stem cell biology, advancing bioengineering and related technological approaches to improve cancer treatment strategies, and translating discoveries into clinical applications. The successful candidate will promote the development and dissemination of innovative technologies and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, both within and outside BC Cancer/UBC, to lead and foster synergistic research efforts and enhance the impact of cancer research. They will work collaboratively in diverse groups to bring forward strategic initiatives for the School, the Faculties and BCCRI.
Reporting to the Director of the UBC School of Biomedical Engineering with accountability to the Senior Executive Director of BCCRI as part of their role as the Dr. Connie Eaves Chair in Cancer Stem Cell Research, the successful candidate will lead an independent, internationally-recognized research program located at the LJ Blackmore Cancer Research Centre of the BCCRI, participate in the teaching activities of the School, as well as provide mentorship and training to undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate learners. The incumbent will also be expected to provide service to the University and the broader academic and professional community.
The successful candidate will hold a PhD, MD or MD/PhD with a focus on stem cells, tumour initiating cells, or stem cell engineering in cancer research, and has an outstanding record of independent research achievements, including high-impact publications, significant national and/or international peer-reviewed grant funding, and contributions to the advancement of cancer science. If appointed at the rank of Associate Professor, the successful candidate will have demonstrated evidence of successful teaching and ability to supervise and mentor graduate students, a growing body of productive scholarly activity, and must be willing to participate in the affairs of the School and the University. If appointed at the rank of Professor, the successful candidate will have demonstrated appropriate standards of excellence in teaching, have received wide recognition in their growing body of productive scholarly activity, and participated significantly in academic and professional affairs. Applicants with an engineering background will be expected to register, or be eligible to register, with Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (EGBC). The ideal candidate will be a visionary leader who is passionate about advancing cancer stem cell biology and bioengineering through innovative approaches and state-of-the-art tools, and who is dedicated to improving patient outcomes. This position offers the chance to drive transformative research that integrates the latest technological advancements to revolutionize our understanding and management of cancer. Examples of areas of potential expertise include: molecular mechanisms of cancer biology, functional genomics, synthetic and systems biology, therapeutic cell engineering and cancer stem cell biology. In addition, the successful candidate will demonstrate a willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own, and a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
The expected salary for this position is $190,000 to $230,000 per annum for the rank of Associate Professor with tenure, and $230,000 to $250,000 per annum for the rank of Professor with tenure.
