The Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine, Department of Pediatrics at The University of British Columbia (UBC), located at BC Children’s Hospital, invites applications for a full-time faculty position at the rank of Associate Professor (tenure) to join the well-established program as a research leader.
The Department of Pediatrics of the University of British Columbia, British Columbia Children’s Hospital, and Sunny Hill Health Centre is one of the largest Pediatric Departments in Canada. Our collaborative team of physicians, scientists, allied health professionals and administrative staff are dedicated to providing leadership and excellence in: Patient Care, Education, Research and Child Health Advocacy. The Department of Pediatrics strives to be a cohesive academic and professional body committed to the advancement of child health through the delivery of exemplary care, teaching and research. We recognize that the enhancement of our department requires active collaboration and integration with the UBC Faculty of Medicine, associated hospitals, research organizations, and our various stakeholders. The Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine is one of the largest Divisions, with 26 faculty members. The Division covers different areas, including inpatient wards, complex care, Child Protection Unit and Social Pediatrics. The Division is involved with various research projects including social pediatrics, asthma, urinary tract infection (UTI) and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). The Division is also involved in various quality improvement projects.
The BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute (BCCHR) is a partnership of UBC and the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA) whose programs include BC Children’s Hospital, Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children and the BC Women’s Hospital and Health Centre. The BCCHR is dedicated to high quality research spanning a wide range of concerns relevant to children’s and family health.
The Professorship is partly funded and supported by the endowment funds from the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation. Objectives of the Professorship are:
• Focusing on health and well-being of marginalized and racialized children with complex medical needs.
• Develop resources to provide low barrier, trauma-informed and culturally safe care to marginalized, refugee and immigrant children.
• Developing studies that use participatory-research methods (CBPAR, YPAR) and qualitative methodologies to co-design and test social and behavioral interventions.
• Developing resources to achieve better health outcomes for vulnerable populations in BC, Canada and communities around the world
• Improving health for all people in all nations by promoting wellness and eliminating avoidable disease, disability and death.
• Develop research studies to include marginalized / racialized children and immigrants.
Reporting to the Head of the UBC Department of Pediatrics, the incumbent will be a Clinician Scientist and will be expected to establish an active independent program in pediatric medicine and to forge productive collaborations
with other members of the division and the BCCHR. This position will contribute to the culture of research, through collaborative research, will help to train the next generation of academic pediatricians and build the future pediatric scientist workforce by translating research findings to benefit the children of BC and around the world, and by enhancing collaboration across Canada. The incumbent’s time will be well-protected to allow for the establishment of a vibrant research program. The appointee will be expected to mentor junior faculty in research, participate in the teaching activities of the Department, as well as provide mentorship and training to undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate learners. The incumbent will also be expected to provide service to the University and the broader academic and professional community.
The successful candidate will hold an MD or MD/PhD or equivalent research experience, be qualified to practice as a General Pediatrician consultant and be eligible to obtain a specialist’s license to practice in British Columbia. The successful candidate will be a mid-level clinician-scientist with an established research program who can complement the current areas of focus and research methodologies, and develop a new focus for public health research. As an Associate Professor, the successful candidate will have demonstrated evidence of successful teaching and ability to direct graduate students, a growing body of productive scholarly activity, and must be willing to participate in the affairs of the Department and the University. In addition, the successful candidate will have demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and interact with empathy, understanding and, respect for diverse and divergent perspectives and behaviours. The successful candidate will demonstrate a willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own, and a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
The expected salary for this position is $170,000 per annum.
