The Law Library of Osgoode Hall Law School at York University invites highly qualified applicants for an Assistant Librarian position as Digital Scholarship and Metadata Librarian, to commence July 1, 2026.
This position is responsible for the coordination of technical and digital services, and metadata management in the Law Library. This includes acquisition of and access to physical and electronic materials to meet the challenges of new technologies and user expectations. In addition, this position serves as a member of the team of librarians that plan and carry out the ongoing development of the Law Library and its services. The Law Library shares the ALMA system with York University Libraries and works closely with them.
Osgoode Hall Law School is the home of Canada’s premier research law library. With an internationally renowned reputation, the Law Library supports the research and teaching of Osgoode and York University faculty and students, and serves a diverse array of visiting scholars, members of the legal profession and the public.
Candidate Qualifications:
Degree: Master of Library and Information Studies (MLIS) from an ALA-accredited program or its recognized equivalent.
Scholarship
• A record providing promise of research contributions in the form of publications or productions, professional development, and/or active involvement in professional or scholarly organizations.
Qualifications, Knowledge and Skill Requirements
• Supervisory experience in academic libraries (academic law libraries preferred)
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• Demonstrated experience in the use of RDA for cataloguing print, nonprint and electronic materials and in the use of MARC formats, LC Classification and LC Subject Headings
• Demonstrated experience in electronic resources management and licensing
• Demonstrated experience with the management and application of automated library systems (ALMA and Primo VE preferred), and possession of the technical skills to identify problems, propose and develop enhancements, troubleshoot, and liaise with IT staff and system vendors
• Knowledge of emerging trends in library and information technologies (including generative AI)
• Knowledge of institutional repositories
• Knowledge of digital library initiatives
Responsibilities of Position
• Oversee all Law Library technical and digital services operations, including
acquisitions, cataloguing, serials, processing, and training.
• Collaborate with OCUL’s Scholar Portal, OCUL’s Collaborative Futures and York University Libraries.
• Oversee electronic resources management and licensing.
• Oversee all scholarly communications initiatives such as the Osgoode Digital Commons, Discover York Academics, SSRN, HeinOnline Author Profile, ORCiD, Scopus and other emerging tools.
• Develop technical and administrative goals, policies and workflows.
• Perform original (and complex copy) cataloguing of print, non-print and electronic library materials using the ALMA system, RDA, MARC, LC subject headings and LC Classification (primarily KF Modified).
• Collaborate with York University Libraries on ALMA catalogue maintenance and system configuration.
• Participate in hiring process, training, and skill development of staff.
• Provide supervision of student workers.
• Assist with collection development.
• Participate in library planning, committees and task forces.
• Attend professional meetings and workshops to continue development and update professional skills.
• Participate in campus, regional, national professional development and collaborative activities and in other endeavors to further the teaching and research mission of the law school.
