The Department of Anthropology in the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies at York University invites highly qualified applicants for an Assistant Professor position in Archaeology. This is a tenure-track appointment to the Professorial Stream to commence July 1, 2026.

The Department of Anthropology https://www.yorku.ca/laps/anth/ in the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies is developing a new Archaeology Program focused on preparing students for careers in cultural heritage management (CHM) archaeology. Centered on experiential learning and a curriculum that emphasizes sustainability, ethics, and collaboration with Indigenous and descendant communities, the program will equip students with the skills and critical perspectives essential for contemporary archaeological practice. The successful candidate will join a collegial and research-active department recognized for its engaged and community-oriented scholarship, and will play a leading role in advancing the program’s development through the creation of new laboratory, field, and community-based learning opportunities, and through research and teaching that prepare students for both professional and academic pathways in archaeology.

Candidate Qualifications:
• Degree: A PhD in Archaeology/Anthropology by the start of the appointment is required.
• Scholarship:
o A coherent and well-articulated program of research and/or professional practice and specialization in archaeology and experience in cultural heritage management (CRM).
o A record or evident promise of generating innovative, substantive, rigorous, and as appropriate, externally funded research or research creation.
o A record or evident promise of making influential contributions and demonstrating excellence in the field (e.g. record of publications in key peer-reviewed archaeology journals, major presentations and awards)
o Candidates who research is in East North America, informed by decolonial perspectives and is grounded in innovative methods is preferred.
o Evidence of community engagement and production of public-facing research outputs is an asset.
o The successful candidate will have the opportunity to apply for CFI or infrastructure funding to support their research program, as relevant.
• Teaching:
o A record or evident promise of excellence in teaching and dedication to students (e.g. teaching accomplishments, pedagogical innovations, student and peer evaluations)
o Suitability for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies, given that the position will involve graduate teaching and supervision.
• Additional:
o The candidate will have in hand or be eligible to receive a Professional Archaeological License in Ontario.
o Demonstrated record of recent archaeological field experience is preferred.
