  • Work closely with Pacific Life Re’s Protection line of business in managing development and deployment of reinsurance documentation for new and in-force business, focusing on the North America market (including both US and Canada). This will involve drafting and reviewing treaty language, liaising with internal stakeholders including pricing, marketing and operations, developing and communicating corporate position on contract wording, monitoring industry trends and working closely with treaty analysts.
  • Proactively researching and advising the business on relevant Canadian regulatory matters, liaising with the regulators where appropriate.
  • Perform other general legal responsibilities such as acting as the internal contract review resource to support the business in reviewing vendor/other contracts, performing annual/quarterly legal compliance activities, supporting boards of legal entities dedicated to matters relating to the Canada Branch, ensuring appropriate maintenance of legal records, dealing with ad hoc legal queries (e.g. IT, HR etc.). Serve as the Chief Compliance Officer, and the Chief Anti Money Laundering Officer for the Canada Branch.
  • Providing legal support in relation to disputed claims and/or other disputes with reinsurance clients. Any material disputes will be supported by external counsel. Liaising with other legal teams relevant to the role across Pacific Life Re and Pacific Life to maintain relevant standards and collaborate on projects and initiatives that apply organization-wide.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Minimum of 4-5 years post qualification legal experience.
  • An LLB in addition to being a member in good standing with the Law Society of Upper Canada.
  • Legal working experience with contracts, contract law, preferably from a financial services environment (reinsurance, insurance, investments, banking).
  • Knowledge and understanding of Canadian financial services regulation preferably in an insurance context.
