The Department of Anesthesia is one of the most research-intensive anesthesia departments across Canada and is composed of approximately 130 clinicians and scientists working on the McGill downtown campus and at the Jewish General Hospital, the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC), St. Mary’s Hospital, and their research institutes, as well as all other McGill-affiliated hospital sites.The successful applicant will direct the academic activities of McGill’s Department of Anesthesia, promoting excellence in clinical innovation, teaching and research at all of its sites. The initial appointment to the Chair position is for a five-year term, with the possibility of a tenure stream professorial position, depending on the applicant’s academic profile and experience. All McGill faculty members are expected to contribute to service activities within their units, the University, and the wider scholarly community.The successful candidate is an energetic and thoughtful leader with demonstrated abilities to manage change and encourage excellence in complex, high-stakes environments while creating a positive and team-building atmosphere. A track record of mentorship and a demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion are also expected.Qualifications and Educational RequirementsThe successful candidate is expected to:be an academic physician at the associate or full professor level; and possess anesthesia specialty certification from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (FPCPC), or from an equivalent organization;have a major interest in undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate education;demonstrate excellence in clinical, research and/or education environments;be able to provide a vision for the Department of Anesthesia and be an energetic and influential leader with demonstrated abilities in team-building and in implementation of change;provide leadership in the recruitment, mentoring, and development of faculty to their full potential;encourage collaborative clinical and academic work between the different sites of the Department and between different Departments of the University and hospitals;have experience administering an academic medical unit or some other form of leadership in academic medicine;be licensed or eligible for licensure in the province of Québec;be fluent in English.
