The University of Rhode Island’s Feinstein College of Education seeks applicants for a non-
tenure-track clinical assistant professor in early childhood teacher education. This is a full-
time, nine-month appointment beginning in Fall 2025, with a two-year appointment with
possibility of renewal. The primary responsibilities include teaching early childhood teacher
education courses, supervising practicum and/or residency experiences, assisting in program
coordination, conducting practice scholarship, and engaging in service.
Additional duties will include developing and maintaining collaborative and
professional partnerships with local schools and districts as well as with URI’s
Child Development Centers (CDC) in Kingston and Providence.
The search committee is particularly interested in candidates who, through
their teaching, practice scholarship, and/or service, will enhance the
College’s commitment to equitable educational practices and academic excellence.

The Feinstein College of Education (COEDU) at the University of Rhode Island offers a
fully accredited Early Childhood Education (ECE) program that leads to a Bachelor of
Science (B.S.) degree and initial teaching certification for Pre-K through Grade 2
in Rhode Island. The Program highlights early childhood (birth to age 8) as essential
and uses a holistic framework to support young children’s learning and development.
Experiential learning represents the core of the program as students obtain practical
experience through clinical work in elementary schools throughout RI and
at URI’s NAEYC-accredited Child Development Centers in Kingston and Providence.
Both centers provide high quality lab-school experiences and serve as both
practicum and teaching residency placements for Prek-2 certification.
The successful candidate will participate as a core faculty member in the
pre-service early childhood teacher education program and may have
opportunities to mentor master’s and doctoral level students in the COEDU
graduate programs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Collaborate with the ECE program coordinator and COEDU faculty to coordinate,
- implement, sustain, and support the early teacher education program.
- Partner with faculty, staff, and administrators across the College of Education to build
- mutually beneficial and lasting collaborations with PK-12 districts and stakeholders.
- Lead efforts to recruit students into undergraduate and graduate early childhood
- education programs.
- Teach courses within the early childhood education major and other
- education-related courses as needed.
- Supervise early teacher education candidates during practicum placements and
- residency-classroom experiences.
- Collaborate with clinical educators at the URI Child Development Centers (CDCs)
- and local school partners.
- Foster an inclusive and high-quality learning environment for diverse populations in
- both the ECE and Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) programs, emphasizing
- equity, social justice, culturally responsive teaching and leadership, curriculum and
- instruction, and evidence-based educational practices.
- Engage in practice scholarship related to early childhood education.
- Advise undergraduate and graduate students in their academic and professional development.
- Contribute to professional service at local, state, regional, and international levels
- within the field of early childhood education.
- Serve on college and university committees to contribute to institutional goals
- and initiatives.
- OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform other duties as required.
- LICENSES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:
- Personal computers, printer, word processing, database management and
- spreadsheet software.
- ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
- This position is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
- QUALIFICATIONS
- REQUIRED:
- 1. Ph.D/Ed.D. in Early Childhood Education or closely related field (or expected
- completion of degree requirements prior to start of the fall 2025 semester).
- 2. Record of successful teaching experience in PreK-2 public or public charter schools.
- 3. Demonstrated strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
- 4. Demonstrated proficiency in written communication skills.
- 5. Demonstrated commitment to and/or experience in equity, social justice, and
- inclusion in education.
- 6. Experience working with diverse groups/populations.
- PREFERRED:
- 1. Evidence of program development in PK-2 schools and/or higher education
- institutions.
- 2. College or university teaching experience in early childhood education courses at
- the undergraduate and/or graduate level.
- 3. Three or more years’ experience as an early childhood teacher in a public school
- setting.
- 4. Knowledge and familiarization with Rhode Island early learning and development
- standards.
- 5. Demonstrated ability to conduct practice scholarship.
- 6. Experience teaching in public school environments with linguistically, culturally,
- racially, and/or economically diverse students.
- 7. Demonstrated ability in culturally responsive teaching.
- 8. Experience teaching online.
- 9. Experience in working with adult learners (e.g., ECE or ECCE workforce, Registered
- Apprenticeship Mentoring).
