The Indian Teacher Education Program (ITEP) has been strengthening First Nations education since 1972 in support of the vision of the National Indian Brotherhood’s statement on Indian Control of Indian Education. ITEP has offered 31 community-based programs since 1977. We currently have 4 existing community-based programs and another starting in January. ITEP is the largest teacher education program in the territories of Canada whose enrolment is centred on the needs of First Nations teacher candidates. ITEP plays a lead role in the achievement of the University of Saskatchewan’s and the College of Education’s strategic aims of Indigenous engagement and reconciliation. As an Indigenous teacher education program, ITEP prepares First Nations teachers to rely on the strengths of their cultures, languages, protocols and traditions to create safe and inclusive learning spaces for learners built on respect, relationality, reciprocity, and responsibility.
Summary
Reporting to the Director of ITEP in the College of Education, this position develops and implements practices, policies, and procedures to enhance cultural, academic, and administrative aspects of community-based programs. The role builds and maintains collaborative relationships within the College, University, and First Nations communities, requiring flexibility and accuracy in a fast-paced environment. The Coordinator / Instructor provides guidance both on-campus and in community-based programming, bridging academic departments and ITEP while addressing complex socio-economic, academic, and life-transition challenges for students. The initial primary focus will be on community-based coordination, with course instruction varying according to program needs.
