Job description

Duties:Under the general supervision of the Director, Office of Indigenous Education and Engagement, this position works directly with Indigenous students enrolled in VIU courses and programs, connecting them with academic supports and resources, such as advising, counselling, student aid, enrolment support, tutoring, peer support, IT help, cultural support, etc. This position is dedicated to empowering Indigenous learners to achieve success and realize their academic and professional goals.Specific responsibilities include:

  • Meeting with students to identify relevant resources and supports tailored to their needs
  • Monitoring student progress, including regular check-ins
  • Supporting students’ completion of coursework by connecting them with instructors, tutors, and other resources
  • Helping students navigate the VIU Learn online learning platform
  • Assisting students complete registration, scholarship, and other forms/processes
  • Helping students make appointments with VIU resource people and accompanying students to appointments with VIU resource people, such as Academic Advisors
  • Occasional travel into community may be required.
  • Contribute to the work of the VIU Collaborative Assessment, Referral and Education Committee (CARE Team)
  • Participate in a wide range of activities, including, student support; institutional, faculty and departmental committee meetings and other initiatives; and professional activities in keeping with their disciplines in and outside the institution.

Required Qualifications:Two-year post-secondary diploma in a relevant subject area (such as social work, education, mental health, child and youth care), or equivalent, from an appropriately accredited institution, and a minimum of three years recent relevant experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.Additionally, the successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • Effective communication, verbally and in writing
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills
  • Creativity and flexibility in problem-solving
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Proven interpersonal and teamwork skills
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s license (and a confirmed satisfactory driving record)
  • Experience supporting post-secondary learners
  • Experience working directly with Indigenous Nations and communities
  • Familiarity with VIU’s systems, policies, and procedures
  • Training in trauma-informed practice
