Here’s the scoop – Summary

The Corporate Controller is a senior management position responsible for overseeing the accounting and financial reporting functions of the company, they will ensure the financial transactions, policies, systems and procedures meet the Unit’s short and long-term objectives and comply with Mars accounting policies, US Gaap and local regulatory requirements. This position ensures compliance with all financial regulations and reporting requirements, and drives internal financial policies, procedures and controls. The Corporate Controller oversees the global shared-service center that produces the statutory and management reporting for the whole group and reports to Mars Inc. The Corporate Controller manages a complex environment of 6 legal entities located in different countries and is part of a multi-$B group (Mars Inc.). Deep technical knowledge of multi-counties, multi-currency environments and consolidation techniques is a requirement. Experience with short-close techniques (3d close) to report to the group. Knowledge of large groups ways of working is a must. The Corporate Controller will be instrumental in setting up the conditions of the finance back-office/shared-service center to grow from $1B to the next $2B. They will create a culture of high performing team and ensures the company has efficient and effective accounting systems. This role is crucial for ensuring the financial health of the organization and supporting strategic initiatives through informed financial decision-making. The Corporate Controller works out of our corporate office in Edmonton, and reports to the Chief Financial Officer.

What a typical day looks like

  • Financial Reporting: Prepare and present accurate financial statements and reports in compliance with accounting standards and regulations. Oversee all accounting and finance processes from recording to reporting, maintaining a high quality of accounts.

  • Internal Controls : Establish and maintain a robust system of internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure the accuracy of financial reporting.

  • Compliance : Ensure compliance with tax regulations, financial policies, accounting standards and other regulatory requirements.

  • Audit Coordination : Manage the internal and/or external audit process, including liaising with auditors and ensuring timely completion of audits.

  • Leadership and Management : Oversee and support the finance and accounting team with dynamic leadership, fostering professional development and performance improvement, and a collaborative environment. Build and foster cross-functional relationships internally, as a key business partner.

  • Financial Analysis : Conduct financial analysis to support strategic decision-making, including variance analysis and evaluation of financial trends.

  • Cash Flow Management : Monitor and manage the company’s cash flow to ensure liquidity and operational efficiency, improving on or achieving targets set for collection of receivables and for payment of invoices.

  • Policy Development : Develop and implement accounting policies and procedures that support the organization’s objectives.

  • Finance Transformation: Focus on and oversee process development and improvement, seeking automation and digitalization. Assess the resource needs of the function and plan for scalability to support the company’s growth trajectory.

What you’ll bring

  • University degree in Business or Accounting, as well as an advanced degree or professional accounting designation.

  • 10+ years of experience in a senior-level accounting or finance leadership role.

  • Current knowledge of accepted accounting standards, regulations, practices, tax laws, and reporting requirements.

  • High level of critical and logical thinking, analysis, and reasoning to identify underlying principles, reasons, or facts.

  • Excellent judgment and decision-making abilities, including strong problem identification and problem resolution skills.

  • Experience in the areas of business analysis, business transformation, organizational effectiveness, and business process improvement.

  • Excellent organizational abilities, including planning, prioritization, and execution skills with the ability to work well under pressure to meet deadlines.

  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, and able to develop and maintain successful working relationships with diverse individuals or groups.

  • Computer literacy, including strong skills in Microsoft Office suite programs, and experience with an ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system, with ability to quickly adapt to or learn new software.

  • Self-directed, with ability to work successfully both independently and as a team member or leader.

  • People leader able to lead, develop talents, motivate and build effective team.
