The University of New Brunswick (UNB) is among Canada’s top comprehensive universities. UNB has a rich history of sharing knowledge and has consistently inspired breakthroughs and new ideas. Its legacy of leading discovery and innovation stems from its entrepreneurial thinking that has unlocked creative potential since 1785. UNB attracts students and faculty from around the world and is consistently rated as one of Canada’s best employers.
The School of Graduate Studies (SGS) at UNB is a university-wide faculty presiding over 67 Master’s programmes and 22 PhD programmes offered by 28 Graduate Academic Units. With over 400 faculty members on the Fredericton and Saint John campuses, SGS is home to over 2000 students.
Reporting to the Provost and Vice-President Academic, the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies provides leadership for graduate education across UNB. As a champion of graduate student scholarly activities, well-being, and academic excellence, the Dean plays a pivotal role in shaping the strategic direction, policies, and long-term vision of UNB’s graduate programs. The Dean oversees the development and implementation of institutional policies related to graduate recruitment, admissions, retention, financial aid, and academic success. Additionally, they work to enhance the university’s research profile by fostering connections between graduate students and the broader research community.
As the ideal candidate, you are an experienced academic leader with a deep commitment to research, student success, and administrative excellence. You bring strong leadership skills to navigate change and growth while fostering collaboration. A collegial and relationship-oriented leader, you excel at engaging with diverse communities, including graduate students, faculty, external research partners, accreditation bodies, and funding agencies. With a visionary perspective on the future of graduate studies, you have the ability to anticipate emerging trends and lead transformative change, ensuring that the School of Graduate Studies remains a beacon of innovation and excellence. You are dedicated to maintaining high academic standards through continuous program review and innovation, supporting graduate student research, and advancing the goals of the School of Graduate Studies and UNB. Skilled in resolving disputes and making sound decisions, you approach challenges with creativity and an open mind, ensuring effective solutions that support both institutional and individual success. Your consultative, consensus-building approach, combined with a commitment to inclusivity, will be instrumental in mentoring the SGS team, exploring new ideas, and empowering students and colleagues across both campuses. With a PhD and experience in teaching, research, and graduate administration, you are well-positioned for a tenured faculty appointment at UNB.
