We are seeking a talented and strategic Employment and Compliance legal Counsel to join the ENMAX Legal team. The ideal candidate is a keen problem-solver and relationship builder who can bring employment and labour expertise, delve into ENMAX’s existing employment legal disputes, incidents and compliance practices and independently manage new and current matters.
The successful candidate will possess excellent judgment, written and communication skills and will effectively collaborate with the business to deliver timely and pragmatic legal advice on a wide variety of pre-litigation disputes, employment issues, labour issues, compliance and policy concerns, litigation, incident management, arbitrations and other corporate matters.
Major Responsibilities:
- Cultivate a deep understanding of ENMAX business operations to provide quality legal advice, identify legal risks, and advise on legal obligations and steps to protect ENMAX’s interests
- Develop timely and practical legal solutions for assigned client groups
- Build relationships and provide legal advice on a variety of employment matters, including contractual matters, terminations, disciplinary actions, performance management, respectful workplace issues, human rights claims, ability management issues (including WCB, LTD, STD and insurance issues), pensions and potentially labour and grievance matters as needed.
- Work with senior leadership as required on incidents, business ethics matters and conduct related investigations as required
- Review policies and advise on compliance with legal requirements and best practices
- Provide OHS, incident management and safety support as required
- Ensure all necessary steps are taken to successfully manage employment litigation and tribunal and arbitration matters and other related proceedings, including at the Alberta Labour Relations Board (ALRB)
- Provide strategic advice to internal business units on pre-litigation disputes, negotiating resolution of disputes and drafting pleadings and correspondence as required
- Assist in compliance matters with regulatory tribunals
- Develop relationships within the Legal Team and across the organization to ensure the effective delivery of legal support and advice to the business
- Work collaboratively and strategically with external counsel where required
- Assist with ongoing precedent development and process improvement
- Keep current on key legislative updates, case law developments and inform the business and Legal Team as required
education Required:
- Law degree (LL.B. or J.D.) from an accredited law school
Qualifications & Experience:
- Practicing member in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta
- 6+ years’ post-call experience at a top-level firm and/or in-house employment and compliance legal experience
- Strong experience in employment law, including employment standards, ability management, human rights), conducting investigations, drafting submissions and appearing before tribunals and courts on employment matters.
- Strong understanding of role of policies, standards and compliance in organizations
- Experience in conducting and managing internal investigations
- Experience with collective bargaining agreements and familiarity with ALRB processes is an asset
- Experience in a unionized workplace is an asset
- Experience in one or more of the following specific areas is an asset:

Location: This role will be part of our hybrid (home and office) workforce with office workspace located at ENMAX Place (141 – 50th Avenue SE, Calgary, AB). You will work from home on Mondays and Fridays and in the office on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
