(Half Time – Time-limited)
Acting Coordinator of Contextual Education including the Summer Distance Program
Atlantic School of Theology is hiring a limited part-time appointment in Pastoral Theology. This half-time appointment includes the role of Acting Coordinator of Contextual Education including AST’s Summer Distance Program. Contextual Education encompasses the practicum courses required for all degree programs at AST. These courses require students to work or volunteer in various congregational and ministry sites. The coordinator is responsible for working with students, supervisors, and placements.
The Summer Distance MDiv primarily prepares candidates for ministry in the United Church of Canada. Students from Anglican and United Church of Christ have also been enrolled. Familiarity with one of these denominations will be an asset.
Dates April 1, 2025 – Dec 31, 2026, with the possibility of an extension
Location Remote work is possible however presence on the AST campus in Halifax, NS, during the summer term is required.
Personal Profile
Applicants to this position should have a strong competence and ability to teach and do research in at least one of the following areas, with clear potential for crossover in another:
Supervised field education/contextual education
Liturgy and worship
Technology for church and ministry
Pastoral care, preaching, evangelism
Leadership studies
Social analysis
Qualitative research methods
Interreligious/interfaith dialogue
Ecumenism
Qualifications
The successful candidate will have:
A terminal degree in Pastoral Theology
The ability to teach effectively in on-campus, online, and hybrid environments
Strong collegial and collaborative skills
Management skills and vision to lead a vibrant distance MDiv program
Experience with contextual education
Awareness of Canadian ecclesial and social context
Situated awareness of AST’s founding church denominations
Ecumenical faith commitments that engage a diverse student body
An ability to navigate church bodies/structures, and to strengthen existing partnerships
A compelling case for institutional fit
Salary & Rank: The terms and conditions of the successful candidate’s employment will be governed by the current Collective Agreement between the AST Board of Governors and the AST Faculty Association.
Vacation & Benefits: 22 days of vacation per annum plus university closures; office space; health, dental, AD&D, and life insurance; fitness allowance; professional activities allowance; research leave – pro-rated for ½ time position
