The midpoint of the range is approximately halfway between the minimum and the maximum and represents an employee that possesses full job knowledge, qualifications and experience for the position. In the normal course, employees will be hired, transferred or promoted between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range for a job.Posting End Date October 8, 2024Note: Applications will be accepted until 11:59 PM on the Posting End Date.Job End Date Apr 30, 2025This is a part time role (0.05 FTE). The expected start date for this position is as soon as possible and expected end date is April 30, 2025 with possibility of extension.This position will help provide mentorship and career advice to the graduate students in the MSc Genetic Counselling Program through the coordination of group meetings for year 1 and year 2 students, peer support programs, and occasional one-on-one ad hoc coaching meetings. This position is not meant to provide professional mental health services as these are available through UBC Counselling Services.Organizational Status
Reports to the Department Head. The incumbent will establish, maintain, and enhance relationships/communication between students and program leadership to support student success. Where indicated, the incumbent will refer students to other members of Counselling, Wellbeing, and Accessibility Services and to appropriate university resources, such as Early Alert Program, Ombuds Office, Equity & Inclusion Office, with the goal of enhancing student success. All discussions between the incumbent and the students will remain confidential; however, the incumbent may consult with the Co-Directors of the MSc Genetic Counselling Program to better understand program structures and curriculum, or it there are immediate concerns with student consent.Work Performed· Develop mentorship plans with graduate students to support their academic and career aspirations. Guide students in the selection of relevant courses, identifying career paths, exploring networking opportunities and providing advice on overcoming challenges.· Facilitate group coaching sessions related to conflict management, workplace communication and working with interdisciplinary teams.· Escalate situations that require referral to other university counselling or mental health resources.· Maintain knowledge (e.g. services provided, referral procedures etc.) of university student services and community based mental health services.· Oversee records of referrals in accordance with established professional standards and unit policies and procedures.· Provide advice in team meetings to enhance support for students and participate in ongoing planning, development, evaluation, and quality improvement initiatives that promote goal setting, problem-solving, conflict resolution, and collaboration within the team.· Other duties as assigned.Consequence of Error/Judgement
Must be able to act with a considerable degree of autonomy and independence while adhering to the ethical standards of the profession, the overall policies, procedures and objectives of the Genetic Counselling Graduate Program, the Department of Medical Genetics, the Faculty of Graduate + Postdoctoral Studies, the Faculty of Medicine, and the University. Poor professional judgment or unethical practice would be extremely detrimental to student trust and can negatively impact student academic success. It would also have a significant negative impact on public relations for the Genetic Counselling Graduate Program, the Department, and the University.Supervision Received
Supervision will be provided by the Department Head. Incumbent acts independently within established protocols and ethical guidelines.Supervision Given
May supervise administrative staff.Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of one to two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience– Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own
– Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.Preferred QualificationsMaster’s degree in Genetic Counselling, Counselling Psychology or a related field would be an asset. Eligible for professional certification in Canada. Demonstrated knowledge and experience with genetic counselling profession and practice preferred. Experience with coaching and mentoring of post-secondary trainees in a clinical or professional program strongly encouraged. Post-secondary experience preferred with knowledge of student development theory and expertise working with one or more specific student populations including international students, Aboriginal students, or graduate students, an asset. Relevant training and experience on promoting and advising on student academic success, internship success, career planning etc. Ability to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends.Must have a deep commitment to the principles and values of creating inclusive campus communities and serving the needs of equity-deserving client populations. Proven sensibility and appreciation of the role that race, gender identity, sexuality, disability and social background play in the experience of health and wellbeing required. Training, experience and demonstrated ability to provide services that are responsive and sensitive to the needs of Black, Indigenous and other racialized and marginalized client populations required.Demonstrated outstanding oral and written communication skills and the ability to build rapport with staff, students, faculty, and community partners. Demonstrated attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks and projects. Computer literacy MS Office, email and internet required; experience with databases, Wiki and Shared Docs preferred.
