The internship program trains and mentors University of Alberta students under the OSO Director’s supervision. The OSO is responsible for providing undergraduate students, graduate students, medical residents, postdoctoral fellows, applicants, student groups and other members of the University community with advice and assistance on disputes, appeals, petitions, and grievances on academic or non-academic matters. The OSO works to ensure fairness and due process, and is responsible for information and referral on University policy, procedures, and protocols related to the academic and personal well-being of all students. The OSO provides educational outreach on conflict resolution to all students, student groups, and faculty.PositionThe Graduate Ombuds Intern will work with undergraduate students on issues related to academic problems, academic offenses, and student conflicts (including residence disputes). The Graduate Ombuds Intern will upon request attend meetings, investigations and appeals as an impartial advisor for fair process.DutiesThe Graduate Ombuds Intern will develop skills and gain experience in:

  • Conflict Resolution & Management
  • Restorative Practices
  • Presentation Development & Facilitation
  • Communication (Active & Empathetic Listening and Questioning)
  • Collaboration & Negotiation
  • University Policies & Procedures

Qualifications

  • Registered University of Alberta Graduate Student
  • Demonstrates maturity, diplomacy, respect and tact in working to resolve conflicts
  • Protects confidentiality when working with clients
  • Handles matters impartially and fairly with staff, students and the general public
  • Sensitive to student diversity and promotes inclusiveness
  • Fundamental knowledge of University policies and procedures
  • Experience with dispute resolution processes (e.g. mediation, restorative justice – training will be provided)
  • Demonstrates excellent English, speaking, reading and writing skills
  • Punctual, trustworthy and meets deadlines
  • Independent caseworker and collaborative team member
  • Fluency in French is an important asset; note other language proficiencies
  • Comfortable working in hybrid environment (remote and in-person)
