The Faculty of Health Sciences and Human Services includes the Departments of Child and Youth Care, Dental Assistant, Dental Hygiene, Early Childhood Education and Care, Health Care Assistant, Nursing, Practical Nursing, Social Work, Education Assistant and Community Support, and a Professional Development and Training department. The mission of the Faculty is to foster student success and develop and maintain relevant, responsive, and stimulating learning opportunities that are community-based, globally and locally, and offered in a visionary, interprofessional environment that is conducive to learning and promotes health and wellness for all. The Dean and the Dean’s Office lead, manage, administer and support the instructional, scholarly and outreach activities of the Faculty on four campuses with this mission in mind.Duties:Vancouver Island University’s Education Assistant and Community Support Program is now accepting applications for an instructor to teach Education Assistant and Community Support EACS 140 Understanding and Supporting Behaviours Across the Lifespan.Faculty are responsible for preparing and delivering classes, designing and grading student assignments and tests, and facilitating student integration of theory and practice. Faculty will also participate in program and faculty meetings, liaise with support staff, other staff and faculty.Vancouver Island University places an emphasis on teaching excellence and also encourages scholarly activity and community involvement.Successful candidates will be responsive to diverse cultural and academic backgrounds and learning styles.Candidates must demonstrate commitment to teaching, learning and student success through scholarship and institutional service. Successful candidates will participate in a wide range of activities outside the classroom, including student support; institutional, faculty and departmental committee meetings and other initiatives; and professional activities in keeping with their disciplines in and outside the institution.Required Qualifications:Master’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution in a human services field with a strong emphasis on disability studies (eg. social work or educational psychology) or disability field. Knowledge areas may include inclusion and citizenship for persons with disabilities; teaching and learning, supporting behaviour; alternative and augmentative communication and range of disabling conditions and their supports. The applicant may also have some knowledge in the area of health care and personal care supports for person with disabilities.Experience supporting persons with disabilities with challenging behaviours is essential. Demonstrated proficiency in post-secondary teaching both online and in the classroom, with the ability to meet the needs of a diverse student population.Knowledge and experience applying theory in practice in a manner that is consistent with the content in the course descriptions. Concrete evidence of collaboration and effective team work.Proficiency with the application and integration of information technology in an education environment and familiarity with learning management systems (D2L). Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous ways of knowing and cultural teachings.Must possess a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License and have a confirmed satisfactory driving record.Preferred Qualifications:

  • Relevant PhD (completed or in progress).
  • Broad and current understanding of disability issues.
