Job Title Equipment Instructor

Wage $84,494 – $98,846 (2025)

Reports To Manager, People Planning and Acquisition

Department Corporate Services, People Services

Hours 37.5 hours per week

Other Combination of general office environment and offsite travel; Attends meetings, conferences and departmental emergency situations which may be outside of normal business hours

This position is responsible for leading the development, implementation, and delivery of vehicle and equipment training programs, ensuring compliance with corporate policies and industry regulations by collaborating with City departments to enhance safety and operational standards. This role involves handling a variety of equipment, conducting assessments, coordinating operating training for relevant employees, and delivering Health and Safety instruction to City staff across relevant divisions.

Essential Duties

Specific to this role:

  • Design, prepare, and conduct in-person, virtual, and hands-on training sessions for a variety of heavy and small vehicles and equipment including, but not limited to: table saw, compound miter saw, ¾ tonne trucks, snow plow, small tractor, waste compactor, roll off truck, front-end loader, graders, and chainsaws, ensuring all training materials comply with industry standards and regulatory requirements

  • Assess employee competency through skills assessment, road tests, and certification for specific equipment operation, including “Z” endorsement; maintain documentation and track compliance with equipment Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)

  • Audit fleet documentation, implement a system for tracking incidents, and review for adherence to safety protocols; assist departments and the Health and Safety team in investigating incidents and accidents, recommending remedial options, and supporting CVOR audits

  • Develop training content based on research and feedback

  • Provide advice on equipment purchases and assume responsibility as a signing authority for “DZ” licensing

  • Coordinate with the Joint Health and Safety Committee, ensuring compliance with safety standards and vehicle operation regulations

As a member of the professional team:

  • Develop and administer procedures and recommend resources to achieve strategic objectives

  • Complete continuous research and analysis of industry trends and issues to make recommendations to management and remain current in area of specialty

  • Manage stakeholder interactions in the supply and receipt of information, analysis, and resolution of issues

  • Partner with internal process or program owners to share program objectives, analyze gaps, provide advice on actions to be incorporated in other’s processes, act as a program/service champion

  • Manage customer service concerns, investigating, problem solving and responding as appropriate

  • Maintain documentation, databases and corporate records in accordance with policy and divisional practice; consider legislative municipal requirements such as the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA)

  • Provide data to allow reporting and decision making

  • Procure services and goods related to areas of responsibility

  • Contribute to the development of annual program needs

  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary diploma in related field

  • Minimum five (5) years of related progressive experience, preferably in a municipal environment

  • Possess and maintain a valid Ontario Class “D” Driver’s Licence with “Z” endorsement (or higher), and acceptable driving record

  • Certificates in the following, or willingness to obtain: Train the Trainer, Teaching and Training Adults, Airbrake Instructor, Motor Vehicle Fleet Driver Training, Fleet Signing Authority, Commercial Motor Vehicle Collision Investigation

  • Meets all Ministry of Transportation (MTO) Driver certification program requirements to obtain and maintain Signing Authority, or willingness to obtain

  • Advanced knowledge of the Highway Traffic Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, CVOR, MTO and related laws and regulations

  • Strong mechanical knowledge of equipment and safe operational practices

  • Demonstrated time-management skills with the ability to prioritize workloads and meet deadlines with minimal supervision

  • Possess and demonstrate the knowledge, skills and personal attributes as described in the key performance competencies outlined below

  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office suite of applications, audio/video conferencing, the internet and any other related software

  • Upon a conditional offer of employment, a Criminal Record Check will be required
