What you’ll do 

The Department of Adult Basic Education (Upgrading and University Preparation) at Capilano University invites applications for two non-regular instructors of Chemistry and Physics. This is a unionized position, and the successful candidate(s) will teach four sections during the Summer I and II semesters. The courses will be delivered asynchronously online, and the instructor will have both chemistry and physics students of levels equivalent to Grade 10-12 in the classes. This position will begin on May 1, 2025.

The successful candidate may be offered additional sections in future terms pending scheduling needs. Future courses may take place in-person at our Sechelt, Squamish or North Vancouver campuses.

The successful candidate will teach courses in the area of chemistry and physics at the adult basic education level and may be asked to teach or develop other courses within their area of expertise. Duties include:

  • Teach subjects and skills related to your area of expertise.
  • Prepare and deliver courses, which includes lectures, seminars, tutorials, labs, field trips, and online or hybrid classes.
  • Evaluate student learning through assessments and marking.
  • Provide support to students through weekly office hours and advising.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development to maintain expertise and stay current with advancements and best practices in relevant fields of study.

The successful candidate will also be expected to support the department’s initiatives and provide service to Departmental, Faculty, and University wide committees. These duties include:

  • Create and update course materials, outlines, and curriculum.
  • Development of online courses in Moodle.
  • Participate in meetings, committees, and events at the program, department, faculty, and university levels.

Courses and Schedule

  • All BCHM and BPHY courses.
  • Monday and Wednesday: 0830-1120 and 1730-2020 OR Tuesday and Thursday 0830-1120 and 1300-1550
  • Instructors will be expected to be available for office hours and meetings with students on days of the week that are outside of the class schedule.

Experience, competencies & qualificationsCandidates with a Bachelor’s degree in science or engineering, and completion of a teacher education program with demonstrated excellence in teaching will be considered. Preference may be given to candidates with (or very near completion of) a Master’s degree in Science or Education. They will bring experience teaching Adult Basic Education online and/or in-person including self-paced, multi-level classes from Intermediate through to Provincial level to a diverse population of learners including students who struggle with socio-economic barriers and learning challenges. Preference will be given to candidates with the ability to teach chemistry, physics and biology at the grade 10-12 level. The successful applicant must have a current WHMIS certification as a condition of employment.

Evidence of excellence in teaching will be demonstrated by teaching accomplishments and/or awards, the teaching portfolio, and for short-listed candidates, outstanding performance during their teaching demonstration and strong references from two people who have previously supervised your work.
