Instructor II in Architecture

The Department of Architecture invites applications for a Full Time Instructor II, commencing January 1, 2026 , or on a date mutually agreed upon. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
The responsibilities of the successful candidate are divided into 50% teaching and 50% service. Teaching responsibilities include one of three levels of professional design studio; collaborating in delivery of our five-course technology sequence; and instructing topical graduate elective coursework. The typical teaching load will be one studio and one three-credit course in both the fall and winter terms. In addition to the coordination of CAST, service activities may include involvement on Department and Faculty committees, contributing to collegial discussions, participating as a guest critic in studios and guest lecturer in courses, and service to local and broader community. The coordination of CAST includes strategic planning to expand the role of CAST within the Faculty, organization and implementation of research and academic activities (including workshops, Researchers-in-Residence, and courses), and coordinating with other Faculty of Architecture fabrication facilities to ensure equipment and facilities are in good condition and available to students and faculty.
The Department of Architecture is an energetic and diverse group of professors, instructors, and practitioners who are committed to integrating design education with active scholarship and practice. The Department advocates “thinking through making” and values diverse approaches to material research, representation and integrated technologies. The Centre for Architectural Structures and Technology (CAST), the FABLab, and the Faculty’s wood and metalworking shop provide opportunities for research and teaching directly related to fabrication. Current research addresses design excellence, social and environmental sustainability, interdisciplinary explorations, rural to urban design, northern and Indigenous communities, historical contexts, theoretical questions, materiality and construction innovation, new media, integrated practice, and community engagement. We have collaborative links with other disciplines and research units in our university including the Faculties of Engineering, Fine Arts, and Environment, Earth and Resources. We have established academic links with other universities and research organizations nationally and internationally and are eager to reinforce these links and build new collaborations. The Faculty of Architecture is comprised of an undergraduate Environmental Design Program, four accredited professional programs in Architecture, City Planning, Interior Design, and Landscape Architecture, and a Ph.D. program in Planning and Design. The University of Manitoba is a doctoral / research institution with 30,000 students and 9,000 faculty and staff. The City of Winnipeg, with a population of 800,000, is the capital of a vibrant Prairie region built on Treaty One land at the confluence of the Assiniboine and Red Rivers. The successful candidate will have a professional degree in Architecture and one or more of: professional registration with evidence of authorship and innovation in practice, a post-professional degree in Architecture or an allied discipline.
The successful candidate will demonstrate sustained experience (a minimum of five years) in two areas: 1) innovation and authorship in teaching in both professional design studios and building technology coursework, and 2) the coordination of a fabrication research facility. The successful candidate will provide evidence of effective visual, written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Expertise in housing and institutions that are sensitive to cultural diversity, expanding populations, Indigenous cultures, environmental concerns, and climate change is an asset.
