Vancouver Island University’s Department of Studies in Women and Gender (SWAG) is committed to offering a range of courses that blend theory and practice. Our courses are taught on two campuses (Nanaimo and Cowichan) as well as online. SWAG is committed to critical pedagogies drawing on intersectional feminism, queer and trans theory, critical race theory, Indigenous critical theory, and post-colonial theory to understand both history and present day. By understanding and practicing relationality, empowerment, activism, resistance, and decolonization we work towards a more just future for all.Duties:The Department of Studies in Women and Gender is seeking a sessional instructor to teach one section of in the Spring 2025 semester. The calendar description reads: while studying the critical relationship forged between feminist activism and self-care, students will explore various strategies for self-care, self-compassion, and harm reduction.This course will be taught online asynchronous.Candidates must demonstrate commitment to teaching, learning and student success through scholarship and institutional service. Successful candidates will participate in a wide range of activities outside the classroom, including student support; institutional, faculty and departmental committee meetings and other initiatives; and professional activities in keeping with their disciplines in and outside the institution.Required Qualifications:

  • PhD or ABD in a related discipline OR a Master’s level Counselling credential from an appropriately accredited institution.
  • Evidence of expertise in feminism or gender studies within educational background or professional practice.
  • Evidence of knowledge and practice related to critical strategies for self-care, self-compassion, and harm reduction.
  • Evidence of commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary teaching or student support experience.
  • Experience with learning management systems (e.g., D2L, Canvas, Blackboard).
