Job description

Duties:Teach theory and lab/clinical courses in all years of the Dental Hygiene program. Prepare and deliver classes, design and grade student assignments and tests, facilitate student integration of theory and lab/clinic sessions, evaluate student progress, and develop curriculum. Faculty will also participate in program and faculty meetings, and liaise with faculty and staff.Please note: Candidates with the minimal qualification (Bachelor’s degree and 5 years recent, direct clinical/practical experience as a registered dental hygienist) are restricted to seminar/lab instruction for the following courses: DHYG 211, DHYG 221, DHYG 225, DHYG 229, DHYG 311, DHYG 321.An overview of the program can be found .This position may require travel to a variety of settings on Vancouver Island.Candidates must demonstrate commitment to teaching, learning and student success through scholarship and institutional service. Successful candidates will participate in a wide range of activities outside the classroom, including student support; institutional, faculty and departmental committee meetings and other initiatives; and professional activities in keeping with their disciplines in and outside the institution.Required Qualifications:

  • Diploma in Dental Hygiene from an appropriately accredited institution.
  • Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree in a related discipline from an appropriately accredited institution.
  • Current practicing registration/license as a member in good standing with the British Columbia College of Oral Health Professionals (Dental Hygiene Practitioner category with certification to administer local anaesthesia), or out-of-province equivalent registration and eligibility for licensure.
  • Minimum five years of recent clinical practice as a registered dental hygienist.
  • Experience teaching adults (theory/lab/clinical/practice) in a post-secondary setting with the ability to meet the needs of a diverse student population.

A combination of education and teaching experience may be considered.

  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal and team skills, leadership ability, excellence in written and oral communication, self-direction, initiative, and creativity.
  • Proficiency with the application and integration of information technology in an educational environment.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous ways of knowing and cultural teachings.
  • Must possess a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License and have a confirmed satisfactory driving record.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in a related field.
  • Provincial Instructor Diploma from an appropriately accredited institution.
  • Familiarity with learning management systems (D2L) in an educational setting.
