Duties:The Faculty of Science and Technology offers a Bachelor of Science program with a variety of Majors and Minors, along with diplomas and certificates. High-quality learning experiences are established in lower-level (100- and 200-level) courses that cover biology, chemistry, computer science, fisheries and aquaculture, geology, mathematics, physics, forestry, and resource management and protection. This posting will be open for the year as we look for sessional faculty across a range of subject matter who are interested in supporting this high-quality learning tradition as opportunities become available in our planning for the Summer 2024, Fall 2024, Spring 2025, and Summer 2025 semesters.The Science and Technology Faculty (S&T) at VIU is seeking applicants who are qualified to instruct lower-level (100 and 200-level) course(s), prepare course materials, provide individual and group instruction, provide student support, design and implement student evaluation, mark and grade student work, keep records, liaise with other instructors in the department, and participate as an active member of the instructional faculty.Candidates will possess the requisite experience and expertise both in teaching and in the related course content areas for each subject that a candidate identifies as being qualified to teach. Refer to the . Note, not all courses on the list will need to be hired for. Please specify in your application the course(s) you have experience in (professional and/or teaching) and are qualified to teach.Candidates must demonstrate commitment to teaching, learning and student success through scholarship and institutional service. Successful candidates will participate in a wide range of activities outside the classroom, including student support; institutional, faculty and departmental committee meetings and other initiatives; and professional activities in keeping with their disciplines in and outside the institution.Required Qualifications:Have a strong focus on teaching and student learning; subject currency, and the ability to be responsive to diverse learning styles, cultural and academic backgrounds. A demonstrated competency at working effectively in a team-oriented environment. A commitment to, and understanding of, the importance of equity, diversity, and inclusion in the classroom and workplace.Biology, Chemistry, Fisheries and Aquaculture, Computer Science, Mathematics, and Physics
Doctoral degree in a related field from an appropriately accredited institution. Candidates who hold a Master’s degree and have relevant teaching or industry experience may be considered.
Preferred Qualifications: Relevant teaching experience.Forestry
Master’s Degree in natural resource management or equivalent, or Bachelor’s degree plus 5 years’ relevant work experience in BC; ability to perform instruction and field work in typical coastal forest conditions.
Preferred Qualifications: Membership or eligibility for membership as an RFT or RPF with FPBC; valid Class 4 driver’s license; relevant teaching experience.Geology
Master’s degree in a related field from an appropriately accredited institution.
Preferred Qualifications: Doctoral degree; valid Class 4 driver’s license; relevant teaching experience.Resource Management and Protection
Master’s degree in a relevant discipline from an appropriately accredited institution OR Bachelor’s degree plus 5 years’ relevant work experience in government or private sector.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
